COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Seven Saint John's University track and field student-athletes earned U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-North Region accolades for the 2022 NCAA Division III outdoor track and field season across five events on June 22.

To be selected for All-Region, a student-athlete must either be ranked in the top-five of an individual event in the region according to final TFRRS data or be part of a top-three relay team.

The seven Johnnies honored are:

-Junior Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park): second regionally and seventh nationally in the 4x100-meter relay (40.65);
-Junior Brett Hague (Brainerd, Minn.): second regionally and ninth nationally in the javelin (61.96 meters);
-Senior Brady Labine (Detroit Lakes, Minn.): second regionally and seventh nationally in the 4x100-meter relay (40.65);
-Senior Ryan Miller (Maple Grove, Minn./Totino-Grace): second regionally and seventh nationally in the 4x100-meter relay (40.65);
-Junior Maguire Petersen (Hutchinson, Minn.): second regionally and eighth nationally in the high jump (2.05 meters), third regionally and fifth nationally in the decathlon (6,677 points);
-Senior Shawn Schindler (Maple Grove, Minn.): fourth regionally and 17th nationally in the pole vault (4.86 meters);
-Senior Jack Young (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori): second regionally and seventh nationally in the 4x100-meter relay (40.65).

The 2022 MIAC Outstanding Field Athlete in both the indoor and outdoor seasons, Petersen broke the program record to finish fifth in the decathlon and earn the fourth All-America honor of his career May 26-28 at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Geneva, Ohio. He recorded personal bests in six of the 10 events for a total of 6,932 points, which topped the previous school record (6,802) set by current Saint Benedict soccer coach Steve Kimble '99 in 1999. Petersen also qualified for nationals in the high jump for the second straight year and tied for 19th.

Petersen is the fourth Johnnie to earn All-America honors in the decathlon and first since Brayden Wagner '09 in 2009: Dan Besemann '95 in 1995 (seventh), Kimble in 1999 (sixth) and Wagner in 2009 (sixth).

A seven-time national entrant (three indoors, four outdoors) and nine-time All-Region honoree (four indoors, five outdoors), Petersen earned All-America honors with a sixth-place finish in the heptathlon at the 2022 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships in March.

The 2022 MIAC Outstanding Track Athlete outdoors, Arthur earned his second consecutive trip to nationals in the 100-meter dash thanks to his personal-best time of 10.43 seconds May 19 at the Wisconsin-La Crosse Qualifier. The time was 12th nationally.

He finished fifth in the 100-meter dash's second heat at nationals with a time of 10.68 seconds to take 13th overall. He missed qualifying for the final by .06 of a second (10.62). The All-Region distinction is the third for Arthur, who took fifth in the first heat and finished 10th overall with a time of 10.64 seconds at last year's NCAA meet.

Arthur won three conference titles on day two (May 14) of the MIAC Outdoor Championships. He became the first Johnnie since 1982 (Chuck Williams '83) to win both the 100- and 200-meter dashes in the same MIAC meet, and was the second leg on the Johnnies' first-place 4x100-meter relay.

The All-Region honor is the fifth (two indoors, three outdoors) for Schindler, who qualified for his second straight NCAA Outdoor Championships with a season-best height of 4.86 meters, which was 17th nationally, at the Wisconsin-La Crosse Qualifier. He was the last Johnnie to compete at the three-day national meet and finished 12th (4.80 meters).

Schindler tied with sophomore Joe Charbonneau (New Richmond, Wis.) for the MIAC title at 4.56 meters and cleared 4.90 meters, a personal-best, to finish fourth at last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Both Petersen and Schindler were named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America cross country/track and field team yesterday (June 22). Schindler (3.98 GPA in nursing) was named to the Academic All-America first team for the second consecutive season, while Petersen (3.94 GPA in biology/pre-chiropractic emphasis) earned second-team honors.

Hague achieved All-America distinction with a fourth-place finish out of 20 competitors thanks to a personal-best distance of 65.06 meters on his second attempt at last weekend's NCAA Outdoor Championships. The mark was the second-best throw in program history.

He became the third Johnnie to earn All-America honors in the event and first since Tom Engwall '03 in 2003 (fourth), who is the program's record-holder at 67.80 meters (recorded during the 2003 season). Hague surpassed the previous second-place mark, 63.96 meters, set by Wade Weisz '88 in 1986. Weisz was a two-time All-American in the event: 1986 (fourth) and 1988 (seventh).

Hague ended the regular season ninth nationally with a distance of 61.96 meters in the javelin. The mark was the third-best in program history and gave Hague the conference title.

SJU's 4x100-meter relay team (Young, Arthur, Labine, Miller) broke the school record to win the event in 40.65 seconds - the seventh-fastest time in NCAA Division III this season - and punch the relay's fourth consecutive trip to the national meet May 19 at La Crosse. The previous program record, 40.78 (Nick Gannon, Drew Schoenbauer, Labine, Miller), was set nearly three years to the date (May 16, 2019) on the same track.

The relay had trouble with the second handoff and finished seventh (41.50) in the second heat, 14th out of the 16 teams, last week and did not qualify for the final. Springfield (Mass.) was the ninth and last team in at 40.88 seconds.

The four individuals within the relay combine for 23 All-Region honors, including 19 outdoors: Young (2), Arthur (3), Labine (6) and Miller (12).

The relay garnered All-America honors with a four-place finish last year and won the national title in 2019, after just missing the finals in 2018.
