BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Saint John's junior Cole Stencel (Mapleton, Minn./Maple River) qualified for Saturday's final in the mile run with an eighth-place time of 4:12.99 on Friday, March 13 at the 2026 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships.

The top-four times from each of the two preliminary heats, plus the next-best two times overall, qualified for Saturday's final at 4:10 p.m.

Stencel claimed third in the first of two heats and eighth overall.

He was in last out of 10 runners, by fractions of a second, for the first three laps on the banked track and moved up to eighth at the halfway point. Stencel jumped to fifth for two laps and took the lead with a 29.67-second lap with one to go, before finishing third with a 29.75.
