NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Saint John's junior
Maguire Petersen (Hutchinson, Minn.) won the MIAC Decathlon for the second consecutive season on Friday, May 6, at Carleton's Laird Stadium in Northfield.

Petersen won the 18-man event with 6,677 points, 54 points ahead of St. Olaf's Stephen Peper, thanks to personal bests in four of the day's five events. He joined Steve Kimble '99 (1998-99) as the second Johnnie to win the MIAC decathlon twice, let alone back-to-back. The 6,677 points is the fourth-best total in NCAA Division III this season.
He entered the final event - the 1,500 meters - with a 152-point lead (6,154-6,002) thanks to a second-place finish in the javelin (52.82 meters). Petersen finished 11th in 5:06.44, less than 17 seconds behind Peper, to clinch the conference title.
Petersen trailed Peper by 13 points (4,947-4,934) after the day's first two events. He started the final day with a personal best time in the 110-meter hurdles (15.75) to finish third and followed that with another PR to take second in the discus (35.85 meters).
Following a tie for fourth in the pole vault (3.90 meters), Petersen moved into first place by 42 points and extended the lead to 152 with the second-place mark in the javelin.
