NCAA Entrants

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Seven Saint John's University track and field student-athletes will compete in six events at the 2022 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships next Thursday-Saturday, May 27-29 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

The NCAA announced the selections tonight (May 20).

-Junior Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park), 100-meter dash
-Junior Brett Hague (Brainerd, Minn.), javelin
-Junior Maguire Petersen (Hutchinson, Minn.), decathlon and high jump
-Senior Shawn Schindler (Maple Grove, Minn.), pole vault
-4x100-meter relay team (Jack Young, Kevin Arthur, Brady Labine, Ryan Miller)

The top 20 marks/times in each individual event, and the top 16 teams in each relay event, advanced to the national meet.

The 2022 MIAC Outstanding Field Athlete in both the indoor and outdoor seasons, Petersen won the MIAC's decathlon for the second consecutive season with a total of 6,677 points, thanks to personal-best marks/times in six of the 10 events, May 5-6 at Carleton. The 6,677 points were good for fifth-most in Division III this season. He joined Steve Kimble '99 (1998-99) as the second Johnnie to win the MIAC decathlon twice, let alone back-to-back.

Petersen also qualified for nationals in the high jump for the second straight year thanks to a mark of 2.05 meters, which was eighth-best in Division III. The height garnered him second place last weekend at the MIAC Championships.

A seven-time national entrant (three indoors, four outdoors), Petersen earned All-America honors with a sixth-place finish in the heptathlon at the 2022 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships in March. He begins the decathlon with the 100-meter dash at 10:30 a.m. CT Thursday, May 26 (followed by the long jump, shot put, high jump and 400-meter dash). The final five events start at 9 a.m. CT Friday: 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 meters. The high jump, meanwhile, is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT Friday.

The 2022 MIAC Outstanding Track Athlete outdoors, Arthur earned his second consecutive trip to nationals in the 100-meter dash thanks to his personal-best time of 10.43 seconds last night (May 19) at the Wisconsin-La Crosse Qualifier. The time was 12th nationally. He took fifth in the first heat and finished 10th overall with a time of 10.64 seconds at last year's NCAA meet.

Last night's feat was five days after Arthur won three conference titles on day two of the MIAC Outdoor Championships. He became the first Johnnie since 1982 (Chuck Williams '83) to win both the 100- and 200-meter dashes in the same MIAC meet, and was the second leg on the Johnnies' first-place 4x100-meter relay as SJU won the MIAC team title. The 100-meter dash prelims are set for 2:45 p.m. CT Friday. The winner from each of the three heats, plus the next best six times, qualify for Saturday's final at 12:40 p.m. CT.

Schindler qualified for his second straight NCAA Outdoor Championships with a season-best height of 4.86 meters, which was 17th nationally, Thursday at La Crosse. He tied with sophomore Joe Charbonneau (New Richmond, Wis.) for the MIAC title at 4.56 meters last weekend. A 2021 All-American in the event (fourth place), Schindler competes at 11 a.m. CT Saturday.

Hague ended the regular season ninth nationally with a distance of 61.96 meters in the javelin. The mark was the third-best in program history and gave Hague the conference title. The event is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. CT Thursday.

SJU's 4x100-meter relay team (Young, Arthur, Labine, Miller) broke the school record to win the event in 40.65 seconds - the seventh-fastest time in NCAA Division III this season - and punch the relay's fourth consecutive trip to the national meet last night at La Crosse. The previous program record, 40.78 (Nick Gannon, Drew Schoenbauer, Labine, Miller), was set nearly three years to the date (May 16, 2019) on the same track.

The relay garnered All-America honors with a four-place finish last year and won the national title in 2019, after just missing the finals in 2018. The 4x100's prelims are at 4:25 p.m. CT Thursday. The top two times in each of the two heats, plus the next five times, qualify for Saturday's final at 11:15 a.m. CT.
