GCAA Release

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Four Saint John's University golf student-athletes - junior Thomas Gutzmer (Jordan, Minn.) and sophomores Nate Loxtercamp (Richmond, Minn./Melrose Area), Glavine Schugel (New Ulm, Minn.) and Blake Schuler (Waconia, Minn.) - were named to the Division III PING All-Region 6 team, the Golf Coaches' Association of America (GCAA) announced on May 10.

The Johnnies have now had 55 All-Region honorees in the last 23 seasons (since 2000).

All four Johnnies earned All-MIAC honors with top-10 finishes at the 2021 MIAC Championship in October and played 18.5 rounds during the 2021-22 regular season. SJU was ranked No. 1 in the region according to Golfstat and led the way with four individual honorees, followed by Aurora (Ill.) and Gustavus Adolphus with three apiece.

SJU is currently playing round two of the 2022 NCAA Division III Championship, the program's 19th postseason appearance, at Mission Inn Resort's Las Colinas G.C. (par 71) in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The field will be cut to the top 18 teams and top six individuals (not playing on one of those teams) following today's round.

The All-Region honor is the second consecutive for Gutzmer, who ended the regular season second on the team with a 73.8 scoring average. He finished 10th at the conference meet, months after he tied for medalist honors in the 2021 (spring) MIAC Championship.

Loxtercamp led the Johnnies with five top-five finishes in nine events during the regular season and recorded a 74.2 average in 18.5 rounds, including seven rounds at par or better. He won the SJU Fall Invitational with a two-round total of 141 (-3) and finished second at the conference meet to earn his second All-MIAC honor.

An accounting major with a 4.0 GPA, Loxtercamp was presented with the NCAA's Elite 90 award, for having the highest cumulative GPA among the student-athletes at nationals, at Monday's awards banquet. The honor is SJU golf's third in the last five seasons.

Schugel entered the national tournament with a team-leading 73.3 average and 10 rounds at par or better. He has four top-five finishes, including a win at the Twin Cities Classic with a three-round score of 215 (-1). Schugel finished sixth overall at the 2021 MIAC Championship to earn his second All-MIAC honor.

Schuler registered a 74.8 average and five rounds at par or better, and is the lone Johnnie to finish in the top eight in all three competitions this spring. He tied for seventh at the MIAC Championship.
