SCHEDULE CHANGE: SJU's road doubleheader at Bethel, which was originally scheduled for Tuesday, April 5, was postponed all week due to weather and is rescheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, April 10, in Arden Hills.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (10-10, 2-0 MIAC) opened its conference schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Concordia-Moorhead, 9-8 in eight innings and 6-0, this past Saturday (April 2) in Collegeville.

The Johnnies clubbed nine extra-base hits, including three home runs, on the afternoon and held the Cobbers scoreless in the day's final 10 innings.

Junior lefty Casey Trapp (Blaine, Minn./Centennial) struck out a career-high 13 batters in game two's complete-game shutout.

at Saint John's 9, Concordia 8 (8 inn.)
SJU built a 6-0 lead through the first two innings of game one. Senior catcher Ethan Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./Blake) roped a two-run double for his 100th career hit, becoming the 33rd Johnnie in program history to reach the milestone, and junior first baseman Zach Selchow (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly in the first inning.

Senior right fielder Soren Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./Blake) ripped a two-run triple off the center-field fence with two outs in the second inning and Ethan followed with his second double of the game to give SJU a 6-0 lead.

The Cobbers were held scoreless, and to two hits, through the first four innings of play before they erupted for eight runs on six hits in the fifth inning off senior pitcher Nathan Brandecker (South St. Paul, Minn.).

The lead did not last long, however, as sophomore left fielder Jack Schleper (Shakopee, Minn.) followed Selchow's leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run blast – his third homer of the season and sixth of his career – to tie the game at 8-8.

Soren Roe walked to start the bottom of the eighth and advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt from Ethan, after he collided with the first baseman on the bag. CC elected to intentionally walk sophomore center fielder Jordan Amundson (Eden Prairie, Minn.) before Selchow ended the game with a walk-off single over the right fielder's head.

Sophomore Griffin Larson (Edina, Minn.) earned the win, allowing two hits with two strikeouts in three scoreless innings of relief.

Ethan Roe, Schleper, Selchow and sophomore third baseman Joe Becker (New Prague, Minn.) all had two hits apiece. Soren Roe went 1-for-1, thanks to three walks, and scored three runs with two RBI in the victory.

SJU's defense turned three double plays but the offense left 10 men on base.

The early runs continued for SJU in the game two as the home team plated four in the first inning. Junior designated hitter Max Nyrop (Alameda, Calif.) stroked an RBI double and scored when Ethan Roe's groundball to shortstop was misplayed. Amundson made the Cobbers pay by blasting his second home run of the season in the next at-bat.

Ethan Roe ended the game's scoring with a two-run shot, his fourth homer of the season, in the third inning.

Trapp took care of the rest, allowing two hits and two walks in the 112-pitch shutout. He had a no-hitter through the first 4.2 innings. A Concordia baserunner reached second base twice in the game. The first was a leadoff walk in the sixth inning, who advanced to second on the second out (a groundout), and the other was a one-out double in the seventh.

Amundson and junior second baseman Owen Dauk (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) led the Johnnies' bats with two hits each in the nightcap.

TRAPPED AT THE PLATE: Trapp was named the MIAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week on Monday (April 4) for his performance against the Cobbers on Saturday. He was also one of four starting pitchers named to D3baseball.com's Team of the Week April 6. Trapp's 13 strikeouts against the Cobbers were the most by a Johnnie since another southpaw, Michael Crees '09, struck out 13 against Bethany Lutheran on April 24, 2006, in Collegeville. He is currently 2-0 with a 3.30 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 30 innings pitched this spring.

WELCOME TO THE 100-HIT CLUB: Roe batted 3-for-7 (.429) with a home run, two doubles and five RBI in the Johnnies' MIAC-opening sweep of Concordia. He hit his two doubles and drove in three runs in the first two innings of game one's eventual 9-8 win in eight innings. The two-run double in the first inning enabled Roe to become the 33rd Johnnie in program history to reach 100 career hits.

He ended game two's scoring with a two-run homer, his fourth of the season, in the third inning of the 6-0 shutout. He is now tied with Brent Schloe '00 and former teammate Joey Stock '20 for third in program history with 17 career home runs.

Roe is batting .429 (6-for-14) with two homers, two doubles and seven RBI during his current four-game hit streak.

2 FROM 900: Head coach Jerry Haugen '76 enters this weekend's games needing two wins to reach 900 for his career. He is in his 45th season at the helm of the Johnnies' baseball program and currently touts an 898-681-5 (.568) career record.

A LOOK AT THE KNIGHTS: Carleton (3-9, 0-0 MIAC) has been unable to play since its spring-break trip to California March 18-26 where the Knights posted a 1-8 record with losses in the final eight games. Six of the Knights' nine losses this season were decided by two runs or less. Senior Paul Hinton leads the team in batting average (.490), hits (25) and extra-base hits, and is tied with classmate Jacob Small for the team lead in RBI (10). Small is second on the team in hits (18) and has five stolen bases. Sophomore righty Kiefer Lord is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA, .188 opponent batting average and 36 strikeouts in 21 innings (four starts).

A YEAR AGO: The Johnnies won all three meetings against Carleton last spring, including two via the 10-run rule.

SJU found the scoreboard first with an unearned run – thanks to a sacrifice fly from Nyrop – in the first inning, but the Knights chipped away with single runs in the second, third and fourth innings off Brandecker. Nyrop hit two doubles and drove in three, bringing his RBI total to 30 at that point of the season.

Selchow started the sixth-inning rally by reaching via error. He came around to score, cutting SJU's deficit to 3-2, on a one-out double from Schleper. Dauk walked before Soren Roe gave SJU the lead by driving a 1-1 pitch just over the left-center field fence for his third homer of the season.

Brandecker went the distance, allowing the three runs (two earned) on five hits to even his record at 2-2 on the year. He struck out six in seven innings.

at Saint John's 12, Carleton 2 (8 inn.)
Each starter had a hit as the Johnnies totaled 16 in game two. SJU jumped on Carleton's Ben Jeweler for six runs on seven hits through the first 2.2 innings.

Sophomore outfielder Rodney Erickson (St. Paul, Minn./Woodbury) finished 4-for-7 with three doubles and two runs scored on the day, including a 3-for-5 performance with the four RBI in game two.

Ethan Roe also added three hits in game two, while junior shortstop Matt Hayford (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) drove in three.

Sophomore Kody Dalen (Carver, Minn./Chanhassen) improved to 5-0 with the win. He struck out seven and allowed eight singles. The eighth was a two-out, two-run base hit that ended his day in the seventh inning.

Junior Matt Herold (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) struck out two and allowed one hit in 1.1 innings of relief.

Saint John's 12, at Carleton 2
Erickson, who hit a ground-rule double to start both games of the doubleheader against the Knights, tripled to start the contest. He scored on an RBI double from Nyrop to give the visitors a quick 1-0 advantage three batters in. A balk increased the lead to 2-0, and Selchow and Soren Roe walked to re-load the bases. Dauk earned an RBI the hard way, a hit-by-pitch, and two more runs crossed the plate on bases-loaded walks by sophomore shortstop Landon Peterson (Minneapolis, Minn./Blake) and Erickson. A new Carleton pitcher recorded the third and final out.

Carleton scored a run thanks to a triple and ensuing single in the bottom of the second and added another in the sixth before loading the bases with nobody out. Junior Hunter Ault (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) took the call from the bullpen and ended the threat with three straight outs: a soft lineout, strikeout and groundout.

SJU gained the 10-run advantage with seven runs, all with two outs, in the top of the seventh inning. Peterson brought in the first of the seven runs with a bases-loaded walk, his second of the game, and a passed ball made it 7-2. Erickson followed with a 2-run single and Becker walked before Nyrop hit a 3-run homer off the top of the right-centerfield fence.

Junior Cade Marsolek (Savage, Minn./Burnsville) allowed two runs on eight hits for his first collegiate win. He struck out six in five innings.

Erickson ended the day 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs scored and two walks. He finished 6-for-10 with seven RBI, five walks, four runs and three doubles from the leadoff spot in the three-game series.

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 41-16 against the Knights since 1993, including a 20-8 record in Collegeville.

A LOOK AT THE ROYALS: Bethel (15-2, 2-0 MIAC) is currently riding an 11-game winning streak, which is one win shy of tying the program record, thanks to a split-game, doubleheader sweep of Macalester April 3-4. Bethel is sixth nationally with a 2.98 ERA and is 15th with a .342 batting average, and is scheduled to visit St. Scholastica Saturday before hosting SJU Sunday.

Junior Justin Winterfeldt hit two home runs in the Royals' 5-3 win over the Scots April 3 before the snow started to fly. He hit another homer, while sophomore Matthew Carlsen blasted two and totaled eight RBI, in Monday's 12-1 victory. Freshman Max Sutter pitched the complete-game win, allowing the lone run on five hits with nine strikeouts.

Carlsen leads the team in nearly every offensive category: batting average (.449), hits (31), runs (23), home runs (5), RBI (30), slugging percentage (.768), on-base percentage (.529) and stolen bases (5). Sutter is 5-0 with a 0.73 ERA, .221 opponent batting average and 40 strikeouts in 37 innings pitched (five starts). The Royals received votes in the latest D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) top 25 poll released April 5.

LAST SPRING: The Johnnies went 2-1 against the Royals last spring. SJU swept the regular-season series in Arden Hills, 8-0 and 5-4, but dropped the single-elimination, MIAC Tournament game in Collegeville, 16-8.

Saint John's 8, at Bethel 0
Ethan Roe hit two home runs in game one, his second and third homers in five at-bats, and Nick Penick '21 pitched the complete-game shutout. Roe blasted his first homer on the first pitch he saw with one out in the top of the second inning and made it 3-0 with a two-out, two-run shot in the top of the fourth.

Dauk walked to start the fifth, moved to third on a double from Soren Roe, and both runners scored on one-out, two-run single from sophomore outfielder Rodney Erickson (St. Paul, Minn./Woodbury).

A two-out, two-run double from Soren Roe and an RBI single from junior shortstop Matt Hayford (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) ended the game's scoring in the top of the sixth inning.

Penick allowed five hits, all singles, and struck out four in the shutout. The Royals threatened in the bottom of the fifth when a leadoff single advanced to second on a wild pitch with nobody out. Penick, however, struck out two and coaxed a groundout to end the inning.

Although he struck out six in five innings, SJU tagged BU's Matthew Bohlke with five runs on five hits. He entered the start with a 3-0 record, 2.10 ERA and a .192 opponent batting average in 34.1 innings pitched this spring.

Saint John's 5, at Bethel 4
The Johnnies came back from two, two-run deficits and crushed three homers in game two. Bethel gained a quick 2-0 lead with a pair of unearned runs off Trapp in the bottom of the first inning.

Soren Roe tied the game with a two-out homer in the top of the third inning, but BU regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.

The long ball came in handy for SJU once again, as Becker and Nyrop hit back-to-back homers with two outs to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning.

Lucas Ammons brought in what proved to be the game-winning run with a two-out single in the top of the seventh.

Trapp earned his first win of the season (1-4 record), allowing the four runs (two earned) on seven hits in seven innings.

BU left 17 men on base and batted .167 (3-for-18) with runners in scoring position on the day.

Soren Roe led SJU's bats with a 4-for-6 performance, including the homer and two doubles. His twin brother, Ethan, scored four runs and also posted a double with the two dingers.

Bethel 16, at Saint John's 8 (MIAC Tournament)
SJU ended the 2021 season with a 16-8 loss to Bethel in the single-elimination round of the MIAC Tournament at Becker Park.

The Johnnies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly from Selchow and a two-run homer from Dauk.

Bethel, however, answered with 11 straight runs (eight earned) on nine hits in the next four innings. The Royals cracked 18 hits, including 15 singles, and batted 11-for-19 with runners in scoring position (13-for-27 with runners on base) in the win.

SJU plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, the first on a wild pitch and the second on an RBI single from Selchow, but BU responded with three more in the top of the seventh. Selchow and Dauk led SJU with two hits apiece.

Nyrop blasted his 10th home run of the season – a line-drive, three-run shot – in the bottom of the seventh. He ended the season with 51 RBI, one shy of the program's single-season record of 52 set by Ryan Order in 1997. His 103 total bases were third-most in school history and the 10 homers were fourth.

The Royals ended the scoring with two runs in the ninth.

Penick cruised through the first two innings and took the loss, the first of his collegiate career, allowing eight runs (five earned) on six hits in four innings. He struck out one and walked three.

Bohlke gave up all eight runs on nine hits and earned the win. He struck out eight, including the first four batters he faced, and walked three. One of the first-inning strikeouts was controversial, as Becker was hit by a horizontal curveball on a 3-2 count. The umpire stopped Becker, who was already 10 feet down the first-base line, and called him out for allegedly leaning into the pitch.

Nick Wibben led BU at the plate, going 3-for-5 with six RBI, while Carlsen was 4-for-6 with four RBI and four runs scored from the leadoff spot.

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 44-29 against BU since 1988, including a 15-9 record in Arden Hills. SJU has come out with a win in 10 of 12 series at Hargis Park.
