Johnnies Continue to Improve at Home Finale

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - Saint John's track and field won 13 events at its Last-Minute Invitational on Friday, April 29, in Clemens Stadium.

The Johnnies recorded 31 top-three marks/times in a field that included Concordia-Moorhead, Minnesota-Morris, Division I St. Thomas and Wisconsin-Superior. The high jump and pole vault were held indoors.

A pair of juniors, Brett Hague (Brainerd, Minn.) and Maguire Petersen (Hutchinson, Minn.), performed well in the javelin. Hague won the event with a personal-best throw of 59.42 meters, the third-best distance in program history and the 11th-best mark in NCAA Division III this season, and Petersen was second with a season-best throw of 53.50 meters.

The Johnnies' distance runners split between the 800- and 1,500-meter runs and excelled in both events. SJU recorded the top six times in the 1,500 meters, led by senior Dillon Diekmann (Lake Elmo, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) in 4:05.73, and collected the top four times in the 800 meters. Sophomore Tommy Allen (Woodbury, Minn./St. Paul Academy) led the way in the 800 with a time of 1:56.16, 0:00.34 ahead of junior Alexei Hensel (Buffalo, Minn.) in second (1:56.50).

Senior Kevin Arthur (Champlin Park, Minn.) won two events, the 100- (10.96) and 200-meter (22.52) dashes. Senior Ryan Miller (Maple Grove, Minn./Totino-Grace) made his outdoor debut and followed Arthur in second place (11.16) in the 100-meter sprint, while senior Jack Young (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) was second in the 200 (22.73).

SJU also tallied the top three marks - all 4.47 meters - in the pole vault: a season-best height for junior Joe Stauffer (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti), senior Shawn Schindler (Maple Grove, Minn.) and sophomore Joe Charbonneau (New Richmond, Wis.).

Peterson won the high jump with a season-best height of 2.00 meters and senior Sam Rademacher (Marshall, Minn.) claimed third (1.90 meters). Petersen tied with Concordia-Moorhead's Anthony Marsh, but cleared 2.00 meters on his second attempt to Marsh's third.

Senior Michael Wallace (Nassau, Bahamas/St. Anne's) won the triple jump with a season-best mark of 14.38 meters, which is good for 15th in Division III and was 0.01 meters from his PR, and junior Elijah Wade (Waco, Texas/Vanguard College Prep) was second (13.90 meters).

Seniors Brady Labine (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) and Mack Maroushek (Red Wing, Minn.) went 1 (56.35)-2 (59.86) in the 400-meter hurdles, while senior Omavi Collison (Nassau, Bahamas/St. Anne's) won the 400-meter dash (49.95) and freshman Alec Ungar (Eden Prairie, Minn./Chanhassen) stood atop the podium in the long jump (6.56 meters).

SJU's 4x100-meter (42.32; Young, Arthur, Labine, Seth Cattoor) and 4x400-meter (3:36.02; Arthur, Pierre Deutschlander, Ryan Conzemius, Charles Ellis) relays placed first. 

Junior Justus White (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) took second in the 110-meter hurdles (18.30), while classmates Gavin Rupp (Villard, Minn./Minnewaska Area) and Jaeden Frost (Omro, Wis.) were second (42.02 meters) and third (season-best 41.44 meters), respectively, in the discus. Frost also finished third with a season-best toss of 14.54 meters in the shot put.

The Johnnies travel to St. Paul for St. Thomas' Tommie Twilight on Wednesday, May 4.
