Johnnies Lead the Way at Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Saint John's track and field won the 10-team Carleton Relays on a windy Saturday, April 23, in Laird Stadium.

SJU won five events and totaled 27 top-five marks/times on the day for 209.50 points, ahead of Gustavus Adolphus in second (106).

The Johnnies placed the top three on the podium in two events. SJU claimed the top three heights in the high jump, led by junior Maguire Petersen (Hutchinson, Minn.) at 1.95 meters. Freshman Alec Ungar (Eden Prairie, Minn./Chanhassen) was second (1.90 meters) and senior Sam Rademacher (Marshall, Minn.) was third (1.90 meters). Ungar also placed second in the long jump (6.45 meters) and freshman Anthony Thurk (St. Bonifacius, Minn./Waconia) followed in fourth (5.91 meters).

Junior Elijah Wade (Waco, Texas/Vanguard College Prep) won the triple jump with a season-best mark of 13.75 meters, an inch ahead of senior Michael Wallace (Nassau, Bahamas/St. Anne's) in second place (13.73 meters). Junior Alex Crnkovich (Omaha, Neb./Mount Michael Benedictine) was third (12.85 meters). 

Junior Brett Hague (Brainerd, Minn.) won the javelin with a personal-best throw of 56.80 meters, the 20th-best distance in NCAA Division III this season. Petersen was 12 feet behind in second (53.05 meters) and freshman Max Lelwica (Brainerd, Minn.) was fifth (44.97 meters).

SJU's 4x100-meter relay team (Jack Young, Kevin Arthur, Brady Labine, Seth Cattoor) won the event in 42.57 seconds.

The Johnnies recorded three of the top five heights in the pole vault. Senior Shawn Schindler (Maple Grove, Minn.) tied for first place at 4.12 meters, while sophomore Dan Eickhoff (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) and junior Mason DeGross (New Prague, Minn.) were fourth and fifth, respectively, at 3.97 meters. Sophomore Max Doom (Edina, Minn.) was sixth (3.82 meters).

With the wind in his face, junior Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) took second in the 200-meter dash (22.55) and senior Mack Maroushek (Red Wing, Minn.) was second in the 400-meter hurdles (59.87).

Senior Nathan Meyer (Iowa City, Iowa/Regina) claimed second in the steeplechase (10:08.10) and freshman Eamon Cavanaugh (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) was fifth (10:17.52). 

Junior Jaeden Frost (Omro, Wis.) posted a second-place mark in the shot put with a season-best toss of 14.35 meters and junior Eli Mollet (Jefferson, S.D./Bishop Heelan Catholic, Iowa) was fifth (13.64 meters). Mollet led SJU with a third-place mark (second among collegiate throwers) in the hammer (49.60 meters), followed by freshman Joe Mensen (Hudson, Wis./Hill-Murray) and Frost in fourth (46.93 meters) and fifth (46.40 meters), respectively. Junior Gavin Rupp (Villard, Minn./Minnewaska Area) led SJU in the discus with fourth place (41.24 meters).

Senior Dillon Diekmann (Lake Elmo, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) finished third overall, first among collegiate runners, in the 1,500 meters (4:09.80). Junior Mitch Grand (Hutchinson, Minn.) was fourth (fifth overall) in the 5,000 meters (16:10.50) and junior Will Mattock (Maryville, Mo.) placed sixth, fifth among collegiate competitors, in the 800 meters (1:59.81).

The Johnnies compete next Saturday, April 30, at Division II MSU-Moorhead's Ron Masanz Classic.
