A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (13-13, 5-3 MIAC) head coach Jerry Haugen '76 earned his 900th and 901st career wins in the Johnnies' doubleheader sweep of Hamline, 4-0 and 9-2, on Wednesday (April 13) in Collegeville. The Johnnies batted .355 with five home runs and received complete-game efforts from senior pitcher Nathan Brandecker (South St. Paul, Minn.) and junior lefty Casey Trapp (Blaine, Minn./Centennial), who held the Pipers to a .161 (9-for-56) average.

Haugen, who is in his 45th season at the helm of the SJU baseball program, has a 901-684-5 (.568) record.

Game 1
All of the game's scoring came via two, two-run innings. Sophomore third baseman Joe Becker tripled to start the bottom half of the third inning and scored on junior first baseman Max Nyrop's (Alameda, Calif.) RBI single. Senior catcher Ethan Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./Blake) made it 2-0 with an RBI double, his ninth of the season and 30th of his career.

SJU tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Becker added to the cushion with another RBI, this time with a two-out single, and junior shortstop Matthew Hayford (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) scored from third base on an errant throw from the catcher when Becker stole second base.

Brandecker allowed four hits and struck out five to improve to 4-1 this spring. The complete-game shutout was the first of his collegiate career, as well as his 10th career win.

Nyrop, sophomore third baseman Joe Becker (New Prague, Minn.) and sophomore left fielder Rodney Erickson (St. Paul, Minn./Woodbury) added two hits apiece.

Game 2
SJU scored a run or more in each of the first five innings of game two. Nyrop started the scoring with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first, his fourth of the season and 15th of his career.

Hayford made it 3-0 with an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning and junior second baseman Owen Dauk (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) added another run with a leadoff home run, his fourth of the season and seventh of his career, in the third.

Both teams took turns scoring a run, but left the bases loaded with nobody out, in the fourth inning.

Ethan Roe tied the program record for career home runs with his 20th, a two-run shot, in the fifth inning. The homer was his team-leading seventh of the season. Sophomore designated hitter Jack Schleper (Shakopee, Minn.) brought in a pair of unearned runs with a two-run homer of his own, his fifth of the season and eighth of his career, two batters later.

Sophomore center fielder Jordan Amundson (Eden Prairie, Minn.) ended the Johnnies' scoring with a solo homer, his fourth long ball of the season, in the seventh inning.

HU finished the game's scoring with a two-out double, Trapp's 125th pitch of the afternoon, in the ninth.

Trapp moved his record to 3-0 with the win, allowing the two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts.

Dauk led SJU's bats with three hits in game two and finished 4-for-7 on the day. He has now reached base safely in the last 14 games.

TIED FOR THE RECORD: Ethan Roe needs one home run to break his tie with Jed Riegelman '04 - at 20 - and take sole possession of the program record. Roe is also tied with Derek Schiebel '17 for fourth in SJU history with 30 career doubles.

FIVE BEHIND: Nyrop's 15 career homers are good for sixth in program history. He also needs 13 hits to become the 34th Johnnie to reach 100 for a career.

PIPING HOT: SJU has now out-scored HU 79-31 and boasts a .357 batting average (90-for-252) with 24 doubles, four triples and 11 home runs in the last eight games against the Pipers. The Johnnies are now 46-17 against Hamline since 1993, including a 26-6 record in Collegeville. SJU has won each of the last seven games at Becker Park and 18 of the last 21 overall in the series.

A LOOK AT THE OLES: St. Olaf (8-8, 2-2 MIAC) split a doubleheader last Sunday (April 10) against Augsburg in River Falls, Wis. The Oles posted a 5-0 shutout in game one, thanks to 11 strikeouts in six innings from fifth-year senior Hunter Barber, but mustered only four hits in a 2-1 loss in the nightcap. Freshman infielder Matthew Kulesa leads the team with a .355 batting average (11-for-31), while sophomore infielder Joey Glampe is close behind at .348 (16-for-46) with a team-leading 15 RBI and four of the team's six home runs. Senior Sam Westermeyer is 2-1 with a 2.81 ERA and 24 strikeouts, to four walks, in 16 innings. Barber is also 2-1 with a 4.22 ERA with 21 strikeouts (to three walks) in 21 innings. STO is batting only .246 as a team, but touts a 3.57 ERA and a .260 opponent batting average on the mound (51 free passes in 126 innings).

LAST SPRING: The Johnnies went 1-2 against St. Olaf last spring, in which two of the three games went to extra innings and the two losses were decided by two runs or less.

Saint John's 7, at St. Olaf 3 (8 inn.)
SJU built a 3-0 lead with singles runs in the second, third and fourth innings before STO found the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth (3-1). The Oles tied the game with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, but SJU took advantage of an error and scored four runs on four hits in the top of the eighth. A pair of junior Eastview graduates, third baseman Zach Selchow (two RBI) and Dauk (RBI) came through with run-scoring singles.

Nick Penick '21 went the distance, allowing the three runs on six hits. He struck out six in the eight innings to earn the win.

Selchow and Erickson collected three hits each, while seniors Ethan and Soren Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./Blake) tallied two hits apiece and combined for three runs scored.

at St. Olaf, 3, Saint John's 2 (9 inn.)
The Johnnies gained a quick 2-0 lead thanks to a wild pitch and a balk in the first inning. The Oles chipped away with a run in the third and tied the game in the bottom of the sixth.

A leadoff walk (Joey Glampe) served as the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Glampe moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an error. Sam Lavin hit a weak groundball to first baseman Justin Langer '21, but his toss to the pitcher attempting to cover first base was wide of the mark.

Trapp allowed two runs on 10 hits, all singles, and struck out seven in six innings for the no-decision.

Erickson led SJU's offense by going 5-for-9 from the leadoff spot, while Selchow batted 4-for-8.

Nyrop saw his hit streak end at 14 games in the opener (0-for-5) but doubled in his first at-bat of game two.

St. Olaf 3, at Saint John's 1
SJU put together a threat Sunday in the bottom of the ninth inning, a single from outfielder Soren Roe and a two-out double from Schleper, but Barber registered a three-pitch strikeout to end the game.

Barber picked up the complete-game win for St. Olaf, allowing an unearned run on seven hits. He entered the game with nine strikeouts in 24.1 innings pitched and set down nine Johnnies on the day without a free pass.

The two teams exchanged unearned runs in the first inning and the Oles scored the deciding runs on sacrifice flies in the third. The first three STO batters of the third inning reached with singles, of which two traveled less than 50 feet. The first hit was controversial, as the Oles' Harold Borg looked to have fouled the pitch off his foot and ran to first. Brandecker and catcher Ethan Roe did not field the ball in fair territory, thinking it was a foul ball, and the umpire awarded Borg first base.

Brandecker took the loss (2-3 record), surrendering the three runs (two earned) on six hits. He struck out three in seven innings. Sophomore Kody Dalen (Carver, Minn./Chanhassen) pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

Nyrop led SJU's bats with two hits, while Ethan Roe extended his hit streak to 10 games with a fourth-inning single. SJU posted a 7-6 edge in hits but batted 2-for-12 with runners on base and the leadoff hitter reached only once in the nine innings. The big hit was missing all series long as the Johnnies batted .174 (8-for-46) with runners on, including .160 (4-for-25) with runners in scoring position, in the three games.

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 15-6 against the Oles since 2010, including wins in nine of the last 12 meetings. SJU is 6-2 in the last four doubleheaders at Mark Almli Field.
