Johnnie T&F Leaves Minnesota Weather for California

The Johnnie track and field team competes at Azusa Pacific's Bryan Clay Invitational on Thursday and Friday, April 14 and 15, in Azusa, Calif. - Live Results | Live Video

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's track and field won 12 events at its home opener last Saturday (April 9) in Clemens Stadium. In addition to the open meet, junior Maguire Petersen (Hutchinson, Minn.) also won the two-day SJU Decathlon on Sunday (April 10).

The Johnnies totaled 26 top-three marks/times in the meet.
 
A pair of Johnnies, junior Kevin Arthur (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) and freshman Alec Ungar (Eden Prairie, Minn./Chanhassen), won two individual events on the day. Arthur, the reigning MIAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week, won the 100-meter dash (10.89) and senior Jack Young (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) was third (11.19), 0.01 from second place. Arthur also took first in the 200-meter dash in 21.97, while Young and senior Seth Cattoor (Marshall, Minn.) were second (22.37) and third (23.00), respectively.
 
Ungar, meanwhile, won the high jump (1.95 meters) and long jump (6.64 meters).
 
Senior Brady Labine (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) led the way in the 400-meter hurdles (55.12) and senior Mack Maroushek (Red Wing, Minn.) was third (59.61).
 
A pair of Joes, sophomore Joe Charbonneau (New Richmond, Wis.) and junior Joe Stauffer (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti), went 1 (4.57 meters)-2 (4.25 meters) in the pole vault, while sophomore Tommy Allen (Woodbury, Minn./St. Paul Academy) won the 1,500 meters (3:57.15) and junior Mitch Grand (Hutchinson, Minn.) took third (4:00.95).
 
Junior Alexei Hensel (Buffalo, Minn.) placed first in the 800 meters (1:58.37) and classmate Nathan Clausing (Big Lake, Minn.) followed in third (1:58.95).
 
SJU's other individual event wins:
 
-Senior Omavi Collison (Nassau, Bahamas/St. Anne's) in the 400-meter dash (49.73);
-Junior Jaeden Frost (Omro, Wis.) in the hammer throw (48.24 meters);
-Junior Brett Hague (Brainerd, Minn.) in the javelin throw (54.29 meters).
 
Senior Michael Wallace (Nassau, Bahamas/St. Anne's) led the collegiate competitors with a second-place finish in the triple jump (12.79 meters). Former teammate Collin Trout '20 won the event with a mark of 13.15 meters. Junior Justus White (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) claimed second in the 110-meter hurdles (16.76).
 
The Johnnies' 4x100-meter relay (Young, Arthur, Labine, Cattoor) took first in 41.97 seconds and the 4x400-meter relay (Ryan Conzemius, Hensel, Clausing, Allen) was second (3:27.18).
 
Junior Gavin Rupp (Villard, Minn./Minnewaska Area) and Frost placed second (42.21 meters) and third (40.24 meters), respectively, in the discus. Senior Nathan Meyer (Iowa City, Iowa/Regina) and senior Andy Goldsmith (Tulsa, Okla./Cascia Hall) did the same in second (9:46.38) and third (9:49.15) in the steeplechase.

DECATHLON WIN FOR AOW: Petersen earned his third MIAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week honor (first outdoors) on Tuesday (April 12) thanks to his win at the 15-man, SJU Decathlon with a total of 6,402 points. The score is good for third-best in NCAA Division III so far this outdoor season and fifth in program history. Over half of the decathlon's participants were non-Division III: five from Division I St. Thomas, one from Division II Minnesota-Duluth and two from NAIA Clarke (Iowa).
 
He entered the final day in first place with 3,577 points, 175 points ahead of UST's Nate Raddatz and stood at the starting line of the final event Sunday, the 1,500-meter run, with a 144-point lead. Petersen claimed third with a time of 5:12.85, to Raddatz's third-place finish, to win the decathlon by a 59-point margin.
 
Petersen started the day with a third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (16.07) and took second in the discus (32.45 meters). He tied for fourth in the pole vault (3.85 meters) and claimed second (45.52), behind sophomore Logan Hennen (Prior Lake, Minn.) in first (46.71 meters), in the javelin. Hennen finished 14th overall (4,174 points).
 
Freshmen Max Lelwica (Brainerd, Minn.) and Anthony Thurk (St. Bonifacius, Minn./Waconia) finished seventh (5,157 points) and 12th (4,746 points), respectively. Lelwica placed third in the discus (32.40 meters) and Thurk's top finish Sunday was sixth in the javelin (39.25 meters).

RANKINGS: SJU stayed at No. 3 in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) North Region rankings released April 12. Despite being three spots ahead of Bethel on the regional list, the Royals are ranked No. 23 nationally.

LAST NIGHT AT UST: Two Johnnie seniors, Shawn Schindler (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Matt Gish (Bemidji, Minn.), competed last night (Wednesday, April 13) at Division I St. Thomas' Tomcat Twilight in St. Paul. Schindler won the pole vault with a season-best height of 4.60 meters, which is good for 21st in Division III. Gish, meanwhile, claimed 17th (fifth among Division III participants) in the 200-meter dash (23.72) and 21st (sixth in Division III) in the 100-meter sprint (11.81).

TODAY IN CALIFORNIA: Junior Lloyd Young (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) won the third and final heat of the 10,000 meters - among 35 runners - with a time of 30:24.02 this morning (April 14). The time is the second-fastest in program history (John Cragg's 29:57.80 from 1970 stands as the record) and the 22nd-best in Division III this season.

Junior Alexei Hensel (Buffalo, Minn.) is scheduled to race later today in Heat 21 (out of 27) of the 800 meters.
