ORLANDO, Fla. – Saint John's tennis improved to 6-0 with a pair of wins on Tuesday, March 8, in Florida.
The Johnnies started the day with an 8-1 victory over Monmouth (Ill.) in Haines City and eked out a 5-4 win over NAIA St. Francis (Ill.) a few hours later in Orlando.
SJU did not allow a point at Nos. 2-3 singles or Nos. 4-6 singles against Monmouth (0-4 overall). The Scots' lone win was via the super-breaker at No. 1 singles over junior
Peyton Fischer (Spicer, Minn./Willmar).
Freshman
Ryan Will (Northfield, Minn.) moved his season record to 6-1 with a victory at No. 2 singles (6-3, 7-5).
The afternoon's match started with singles play and the two teams were tied at 3-3. St. Francis (2-9 overall) won at No. 1 doubles, 8-2, but the Johnnies answered with two wins for the team victory.
Sophomores
Bennett King (St. Paul, Minn./White Bear Lake) and
Daniel Perez (Quito, Ecuador) tied the match at 4-4 with an 8-2 decision of their own at No. 3, and the tandem of junior
Will Fischer (Spicer, Minn./Willmar) and sophomore
Mark Rosen (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) recorded the deciding win at No. 2, 8-5.
Perez won his singles match at No. 3 via the super-breaker and King posted a victory at No. 6. Sophomore
Will Deters (Minneapolis, Minn./Wayzata) registered the Johnnies' other win at No. 5.
The Johnnies follow an off-day Wednesday by playing Hampden-Sydney on Thursday, March 11, in Orlando.
