COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's tennis suffered a narrow 4-3 non-conference loss to Northwestern (Minn.) on Saturday, April 11, in the Donald McNeely Spectrum.
The match was originally scheduled to be the Johnnies' first outdoors at the Chang Tennis Complex this spring but was moved to the Spectrum due to the morning's rain. The last match played by SJU in the Spectrum was a 5-4 win over Division II Michigan Tech on Feb. 26, 2011.
The Eagles (8-11, 0-0 UMAC) earned the crucial doubles point, as both teams split the six singles matches, with wins at Nos. 1 (6-4) and 3 (6-2). Senior

Jack Gangl (Elk River, Minn.) posted a 6-4 victory at No. 2 for SJU (1-8, 0-4 MIAC).

Josh Peterson (Perham, Minn.) returned to the court for his first match since March 8 and won at No. 2, 7-6 (7-1) and 6-3. Freshman
Nam Tran (Shakopee, Minn./Eden Prairie) dropped his first set at No. 3, 4-6, but bounced back with a 6-2 victory and took the super-breaker with a 10-7 score. Sophomore
Cole Haabala (Alexandria, Minn.) tallied his team-leading fourth singles win this spring at No. 3, 6-1 and 7-5.
The Johnnies return to MIAC play with a visit to Saint Mary's (4-10, 0-5 MIAC) at 6 p.m. tomorrow (Sunday, April 12) night at the Winona Tennis Center.
