A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (7-6-3, 4-5-1 MIAC) ended its regular-season schedule with a 2-0 loss at Carleton on Saturday (Oct. 29) in Northfield.

Ben Pennell gave Carleton a 1-0 lead with a rebound goal in the 24th minute and found Briggs Priem for the game's final goal 8:09 into the second half.

SJU recorded the contest's first eight shots and totaled a 13-6 (4-1 on goal) shot advantage in the first half. The Knights, however, retaliated with a 10-3 margin in the final 45 minutes to even the stat at 16-16 (6-4 in favor of SJU on goal). Corner kicks were even at four apiece.

Sophomore goalkeeper Evan Siefken (Lakeville, Minn./North) made two saves in the loss.

POSTSEASON BOUND: Despite Saturday's loss, SJU earned an MIAC postseason berth thanks to wins by Bethel (vs. Augsburg) and St. Scholastica (vs. Saint Mary's) Saturday afternoon. The Johnnies ended the conference schedule in a three-way tie Augsburg and St. Scholastica for sixth place in the MIAC standings and won the tie-breaker due to their 1-0-1 record against the Auggies and Saints.

SJU'S MIAC TOURNAMENT HISTORY: The Johnnies are making their 12th appearance in the MIAC Playoffs, which were established in 2003, and ninth in the last 10 seasons. SJU is 6-10-2 in the conference tournament (2-1-1 against Macalester), including a 5-8-1 record on the road.

THE WINNER: An SJU win Tuesday would send the Johnnies to the MIAC regular-season champions, No. 5 Gustavus Adolphus (13-0-4, 9-0-1 MIAC), for a 2 p.m. semifinal game on Wednesday, Nov. 2. The Scots would visit second-seeded St. Olaf (11-5-1, 7-2-1 MIAC) at the same time and day.

A LOOK AT THE SCOTS: Macalester (8-5-3, 7-2-1 MIAC) posted a 12-10 advantage in shots (5-3 on net) and corner kicks (4-3) but fell to fifth-ranked Gustavus Adolphus with a 1-0 decision on Saturday (Oct. 29) in St. Paul. A win would have given the Scots a share of the MIAC regular-season title and the top seed in the conference playoffs. Junior Branko Sciortino leads the team in points (14) and is tied with sophomore Hans Haenicke for the team lead in goals (6). Haenicke touts a team-leading 54 shots on the season, 20 more than Sciortino in second. Sophomore Sam Price has all 16 decisions in net with a 0.85 GAA and a .829 save percentage (63 saves).

10 DAYS AGO: SJU suffered a 2-1 loss to Macalester back on Oct. 22 at Haws Field. Following a scoreless first half, Sciortino gave the Scots the lead with a penalty kick 3:05 after halftime and made it a 2-0 advantage 4:24 later.

Freshman forward Alex Bowman (Elk River, Minn./Rogers) cut the deficit in half for SJU with his third goal of the season in the 79th minute, thanks to passes from classmate Riley Buxell (Afton, Minn./Stillwater Area) and senior forward Ryan Erickson (Eagan, Minn./Inver Grove Heights).

Senior defender Cavin Allen (Excelsior, Minn./Chanhassen) had an opportunity to tie the game in the closing seconds, but his free kick just cleared the crossbar.

Siefken made a then-career-high 10 saves in the loss. Mac recorded narrow statistical margins in shots, 16-13 (12-7 on net), and corner kicks (8-6).

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 23-21-3 against the Scots since 1981, including an even 10-10-2 record in St. Paul.
