A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (25-8, 15-7 MIAC) completed the three-game sweep of Hamline with a 10-5 win, the team's 13 consecutive, on Sunday (May 2) at CHS Field in St. Paul. The Johnnies swept Saturday's doubleheader in Collegeville, 11-9 and 14-4 (in seven innings).
SJU scored 35 runs and batted .363 (33-for-91) with a 1.135 OPS and 16 extra-base hits (11 doubles and five home runs) in the three-game series.
DINGERS: Saturday's five home runs increased SJU's season total to 33 this season, which surpassed the old program record of 32 set in 1993, 2000 and 2016.
ON FIRE: Sophomore designated hitter
Max Nyrop (Alameda, Calif.) was named the MIAC Baseball Player of the Week today (May 3) for his performance in SJU's six games last week. He batted .565 (13-for-23) with two home runs, 11 RBI, eight runs scored and five doubles for a 1.673 OPS (1.043 slugging percentage + .630 on-base percentage). Nyrop was 10-for-15 with runners on base, including 7-for-10 with runners in scoring position and 2-for-2 with the bases loaded.
The 13-game win streak coincides with a 13-game hit streak for Nyrop. He is batting .460 (23-for-50) with 24 RBI, 14 runs and 13 extra-base hits (eight doubles, one triple and four homers) during the streak and leads the MIAC in hits (49), RBI (41) and total bases (84) this spring.
STREAKS: Although junior outfielder
Soren Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./Blake) saw his 11-game hit streak come to an end Sunday, three of his teammates are riding solid stat streaks of their own. In addition to Nyrop's 13-game hit streak, freshman outfielder
Jack Schleper (Shakopee, Minn.) has a nine-gamer going and sophomore second baseman
Owen Dauk (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) has reached base safely in each of the Johnnies' last 17 games.
Schleper hit two homers in the Hamline series and is batting .382 (13-for-34) with 10 RBI and eight runs scored during his nine-game hit streak. Dauk, meanwhile, has a .296 batting average (16-for-54) and a .449 on-base percentage (nine walks and six hit-by-pitch) in the last 17 contests.
ONE WIN FROM A NEW RECORD: SJU is currently riding a 13-game win streak, which is tied for the longest in program history (set in 2018). The Johnnies set a program record for wins (33-8 record) and won their first MIAC regular-season title in 20 years with a 16-4 record, but did not receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament that season.
