COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - Saint John's tennis ended the 2021 season with a 5-4 loss to Macalester on Sunday, May 2, at the Chang Tennis Complex.
The Johnnies (6-5, 4-5 MIAC) took two of the three doubles matches, but went 1-2 in singles matches decided by the super-breaker.
Senior
Thomas Gillach (Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes) and sophomore
Wil McDowell (Sioux Falls, S.D./O'Gorman) improved to 7-3 (6-3 MIAC) at No. 1 doubles with an 8-6 victory, while senior
Nate Jordre (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) and freshman
Mason Meyer (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) posted an 8-5 win at No. 2.
Gillach (6-2, 5-7, 10-7) and Jordre (6-2, 3-6, 10-1) suffered super-breaker losses to the Scots
(6-3, 6-3 MIAC) at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, and McDowell flipped the trend with a win at No. 3: 3-6, 6-2 and 10-7.
Meyer won the Johnnies' other match in straight sets at No. 5, 6-3 and 6-3.
The Johnnies are now 17-5 against Macalester since 2002, in which all five losses were by a 5-4 decision.
