SARTELL, Minn. – Saint John's golf takes a one-shot lead to Sunday's final round of its spring invitational following the opening-round 294 (+6) on Saturday, April 24, at Blackberry Ridge G.C. (par 72) in Sartell.
The Johnnies have the one-shot lead over No. 22 St. Thomas (+7, 295) and Wisconsin-Eau Claire is third at 300 (+12).
Sophomore
Thomas Gutzmer (Jordan, Minn.) is in a three-way tie for first place out of 91 golfers with a two-under 70. He started off No. 10 and eagled the par-5 No. 12. He went 1-under par over his final 14 holes (one birdie, 13 pars).
Freshman
Blake Schuler (Waconia, Minn.) made his collegiate debut and fired a 2-over par 74, while senior
Esten Stensrud (Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area) and freshman
Nate Loxtercamp (Richmond, Minn./Melrose Area) followed with a 75 (+3) each. Freshman
Glavine Schugel (New Ulm, Minn.) rounded out the Johnnies' five with a 77 (+5).
Freshman
Nate Bauer (Andover, Minn.) led SJU Navy, which is fifth (+17, 305) in the 17-team field, with a 1-under par 71 to sit in a tie for fourth.
SJU Blue and SJU White are close behind in a tie for seventh at 307 (+19). Freshman
Max Thelen (Minneapolis, Minn./Totino-Grace) tallied an even-par 72 and freshman
Sam Berger (Waconia, Minn.) added a 2-over par 74 for SJU White, while senior
Charlie Stuck (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) matched Berger's par 74 for SJU Blue.
The second and final round of the tournament is scheduled for 11:15 a.m. Sunday, April 25, at Monticello C.C. (par 71) in Monticello.
