A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (8-8-1, 4-6-0 MIAC) advanced to the MIAC semifinals with a 2-1 overtime win - the 100th of head coach John Haws' career - over No. 19 Gustavus Adolphus on Monday (Nov. 1) in St. Peter.

Senior forward Tommy Picka (Victoria, Minn./Chaska) scored both goals for sixth-seeded SJU. Junior midfielder Matt D. Anderson (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) dug the ball out of a battle near the midline and played it to senior midfielder Kevin Stark-Haws (Cold Spring, Minn./Saint John's Prep), who found sophomore midfielder Brian Real Juarez (Shakopee, Minn.) out wide. Real Juarez then sent the ball behind GAC's back line to a slashing run by Picka, who lofted it over the keeper for his third game-winning goal of the season 5:40 into the extra session.

Picka gave SJU an early 1-0 lead on penalty kick, SJU's first attempt of the season, 17:54 into the game. Junior forward Ryan Erickson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Eagan) drew the foul in the box following a textbook through-ball from M.D. Anderson.

Ethan Miller tied the game for Gustavus, however, off a corner kick 4:15 later.

The third-seeded Gusties out-shot the Johnnies by a 22-4 margin (11-2 on goal) as freshman goalkeeper Evan Siefken (Lakeville, Minn./North) made 10 saves in the victory.

SKID SNAPPED: Monday's win snapped a streak of six consecutive losses for SJU against GAC. The Johnnies are now 11-11-3 at Gustavus since 1979, including a 2-2-1 record in the MIAC Playoffs.

The lone outlier during the nine-game stretch was a 3-0 home win over Augsburg on Oct. 2.

A LOOK AT THE OLES: St. Olaf (16-1-1, 10-0-0 MIAC) is tied with Kenyon (Ohio) for the longest win streak (14) and unbeaten streak (15, 14-0-1 record) in NCAA Division III. The Oles clinched a perfect 10-0 MIAC record with a 1-0 shutout of St. Scholastica on Saturday (Oct. 30) in Duluth. STO out-shot CSS, 21-1. BACK ON OCT. 9: SJU suffered a heartbreaking, 1-0 loss to then-No. 22 St. Olaf in double overtime on Homecoming Saturday (Oct. 9) at Haws Field.

Bechtel scored the deciding goal for St. Olaf 1:52 into the second overtime. Bechtel took the ball up the left sideline, turned the corner and fired a shot to the far post. Siefken made a diving play on the ball, but the shot hit off his hands and found the back of the net. The Oles out-shot the Johnnies 20-6 (7-4 on net), including a 12-3 margin after halftime.
