A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (7-6-1, 4-4-0 MIAC) suffered a 1-0 loss on Saturday (Oct. 23) at Macalester. The Scots' Ben Wagner scored the game-winning goal with 7:07 remaining. SJU and Mac entered the game tied for fifth in the MIAC standings. Freshman
Evan Siefken (Lakeville, Minn./North) made three saves in the loss. Mac held a 12-8 advantage in shots, though the Johnnies notched a 6-4 lead on net.
CLOSE TO A CLINCH: SJU can clinch a spot in next week's six-team MIAC Playoffs with a win or tie Tuesday at St. Scholastica.
A LOOK AT THE SAINTS: St. Scholastica (6-9-1, 2-5-1 MIAC) suffered a 4-3 loss to Carleton last Saturday (Oct. 23) in Duluth. CSS is currently winless in its last six games (a 0-5-1 record) and has been out-scored by the opposition 19-7 during the stretch. The Saints scored a pair of goals in the first 12 minutes of Saturday's game and Carleton responded with a goal of their own in the 58th minute to cut its deficit in half, 2-1. A CSS player picked up his second yellow card of the game 46 seconds later and the Saints played a man down the rest of the way. The Saints scored increased the lead back to two (3-1) in the 69th minute, but Carleton added three more goals on penalty kicks in the 70th, 75th and 86th minutes for the win. Senior midfielder Nolan Friday leads the team in goals (6) and points (13), while senior midfielder Finigan Huffington is close behind with 11 points (4g/3a). Sophomore Liam Lothian is 5-9-1 with a 2.68 GAA and a .614 save percentage (62 saves) in net. St. Scholastica's roster is comprised of 18 international players from 10 different countries this season.
BACK TO THE SEASON OPENER: SJU opened its 2021 season with a 2-0, non-conference loss at St. Scholastica back on Sept. 1 in Duluth. CSS gained a 1-0 lead on a goal from Friday in the 27th minute. Jordan Finneran serviced a long ball to Huffington at the back post, who redirected a header back across the goal to Friday. Arseno Hamilton made it 2-0 with a free kick from 54 yards out in the 59th minute. Siefken made one save in his first collegiate appearance as SJU out-shot CSS, 10-6 (5-3 on net).
SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 14-2 against St. Scholastica since 1979, including an 8-1 record against the Saints in Duluth. The Sept. 1 loss to CSS was SJU's first since 1980.
