A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (6-5-1, 3-3-0 MIAC) senior forward
Tommy Picka (Victoria, Minn./Chaska) gave the Johnnies a 2-1 victory at Bethel with his second game-winning goal of the season 18 seconds into the second overtime yesterday (Oct. 14) in Arden Hills.
Five days after SJU suffered a 1-0 home loss to No. 17 St. Olaf in double overtime, it was the Johnnies who found the golden goal on a blustery day at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex. Sophomore midfielder
Kaidan Popp (Redmond, Wash./Mount Si) found junior forward
Ryan Erickson (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Eagan), who centered the ball to Picka. Picka dribbled past a BU defender and ripped a shot from roughly nine yards out.
Isaac Howell took advantage of an SJU turnover to give the Royals an early 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.
Junior defender
Cavin Allen (Excelsior, Minn./Chanhassen) tied it at 1-1 with his second goal of the season off a corner kick from Picka in the 54th minute. Picka's corner found the head of junior midfielder
Matt D. Anderson (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) and Allen provided the finish.
Freshman goalkeeper
Evan Siefken (Lakeville, Minn./North) made one save to even his season record at 5-5-1 (3-3-0 MIAC).
SJU out-shot BU, 13-5 (8-2 on goal), and improved to 34-8-4 in the series since 1977, including a 16-5-3 record on the Royals' home pitch.
A LOOK AT THE PIPERS: Hamline (2-9-2, 0-4-2 MIAC) suffered a late, 3-2 loss to Carleton Wednesday (Oct. 13) in St. Paul. The Knights scored the game-winner in the 88th minute. HU gained an early 1-0 lead on a goal from junior defender Nate Vogel in the 19th minute, but Marco da Cunha tied it for Carleton 26 seconds later. Senior forward Logan Weller swung the lead back to HU in the 41st minute and da Cunha tied the game again in the 78th minute. Hamline is 0-6-2 since its last win on Sept. 10 at home against Minnesota-Morris.
Senior midfielder Robert Cooper leads the team in goals (5) and points (11), while Weller is second in both categories (3g/2a). Sophomore goalkeeper Luke Rimington has played all but eight minutes in net and has a 2.02 GAA and a .702 save percentage (66 saves).
TWO YEARS AGO: SJU showcased a goal barrage in a 7-2 win over Hamline the last time these teams met on Sept. 21, 2019, in Collegeville. The Johnnies scored four goals in the game's first 25 minutes, including two own goals (off Hamline players into the net).
Theo Salzberg erased the shutout for Hamline with 11 seconds left in the first half as SJU took at 4-1 lead into the break.
Logan Weller tallied his sixth goal of the year for the Pipers in the 77th minute before junior forward
Brandt Belisle (St. Paul, Minn./St. Croix Prep) ended the scoring with his first collegiate goal with three seconds remaining.
The seven goals were the most scored in
John Haws' 10-season tenure and the most since a 7-2 home win over Saint Mary's on Oct. 23, 2004. The seven goals were the most scored by the Johnnies against the Pipers since an 8-0 victory on Oct. 1, 1994, in St. Paul.
SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies lead the series with a 31-8-3 record since 1981, including a 17-2-2 record in Collegeville. SJU won 23 straight in the series from 1982-2004 and the 2019 victory snapped HU's win streak at four.
