SARTELL, Minn. – Saint John's tennis opened its 2020 season with an 8-1 non-conference win over Northwestern on Saturday, Feb. 8, at Sta-Fit in Sartell.
The Johnnies (1-0 overall) swept all three doubles matches and won five of the six singles bouts, all in straight sets. The lone victory for Northwestern (0-2 overall) was at No. 6.
The tightest doubles match was at No. 1, where juniors
Thomas Gillach (Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes) and
Nate Jordre (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) posted an 8-4 victory.
Senior
Jess Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) and freshman
Wil McDowell (Sioux Falls, S.D./O'Gorman) tallied an 8-3 victory at No. 2 and two of the Fischer triplets from Willmar, Hunter and Peyton, earned their first collegiate dual win at No. 3, 8-2.
Jordre and Gillach posted similar wins (6-1, 6-1) at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, followed by McDowell (No. 3), Hansen (No. 4) and junior
Dylan Fyle (Monticello, Minn.) at No. 5.
The Johnnies start conference play against Hamline at 1 p.m. next Sunday, Feb. 16, at Life Time Fitness in Bloomington.
