SARTELL, Minn. - Saint John's tennis continued its winning ways with a 6-3 non-conference victory over St. Scholastica late Tuesday night, Feb. 25, at Sta-Fit in Sartell.
The Johnnies (4-0, 2-0 MIAC) swept all three doubles matches, though two were 8-7 via the tie-breaker. Juniors
Thomas Gillach (Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes) and
Nate Jordre (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) won their tie-breaker 9-7 at No. 1 and junior
Jess Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) and freshman
Wil McDowell (Sioux Falls, S.D./O'Gorman) posted a 7-5 decision in the extra frame at No. 2.
Junior
Cole Dutko (Lake Elmo, Minn./Stillwater Area) and senior
Jarod Swoboda (Willmar, Minn.) earned an 8-3 victory at No. 3.
The two teams split the six singles matches, two of which came via the super-breaker at Nos. 5 and 6 for St. Scholastica (1-5, 0-0 UMAC).
The Johnnies swept Nos. 2-4 in straight sets. Gillach defeated Serhii Tykhonenko, the reigning three-time UMAC Player of the Year, at No. 2 (7-5, 6-1), while McDowell and Hansen won at No. 3 (6-2, 6-3) and No. 4 (6-4, 6-3), respectively.
The Johnnies travel to Orlando next week for five matches in five days over Spring Break. SJU opens the trip with two matches at the same time at 6:30 p.m. ET Monday, March 2, against King's (Pa.) and NAIA Midway (Ky.) at the USTA National Campus.
