Johnnies Move to 2-0 in MIAC Play With 6-3 Victory

SARTELL, Minn. - Saint John's tennis stayed unbeaten with a 6-3 conference win over Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday night, Feb. 22, at Sta-Fit in Sartell.

The junior duo of Thomas Gillach (Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes) and Nate Jordre (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) dropped their first match of 2020 at No. 1 doubles, 8-4, but bounced back with singles wins. Jordre moved to 4-1 (3-0 at No. 1) with a straight-set win (6-3, 6-1), while Gillach needed a super-breaker to claim his victory at No. 2 for SJU (3-0, 2-0 MIAC). Gillach suffered a 7-5 defeat in the first set, but responded with a 7-6 (7-5) win in the second and a 10-6 decision in the super-breaker.

Senior Jess Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) teamed up with freshman Wil McDowell (Sioux Falls, S.D./O'Gorman) for an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, while junior Cole Dutko (Lake Elmo, Minn./Stillwater Area) and senior Jarod Swoboda (Willmar, Minn.) mirrored the score at No. 3.

Hansen won at No. 4 singles (6-3, 6-1) and Dutko followed suit at No. 6 (6-1, 6-2).

The Cobbers (2-5, 0-2 MIAC) earned victories at Nos. 3 and 5 singles.

The Johnnies return to non-conference action against St. Scholastica at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, at Sta-Fit.
