Two SJU Golf Teams Climb Into a Tie for Third at Round 2 of Twin Cities Classic

Round 2 Results

ELK RIVER, Minn. - No. 14 Saint John's golf moved into a tie for third place out of 19 teams following the second round of the three-day Twin Cities Classic on Sunday, Sept. 29, at the Elk River C.C. (par 72) in Elk River.

Monday's final round is scheduled for an 11 a.m. shotgun start at Minnesota Valley C.C., a rare par 73- course, in Bloomington.

No. 25 Gustavus Adolphus (+9, 585), the tournament's host, carded the day's best round (+3, 291) to gain a nine-shot lead over Wisconsin-Eau Claire in second (+18, 594).

The Johnnies are in a three-way tie for third with No. 11 St. Thomas and SJU Blue at 599 (+23). SJU Blue recorded the day's second-best round (+6, 294) to climb three spots on the leaderboard. 

Senior Matt Wahl (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) and junior Charlie Stuck (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) led the Johnnies with a 1-over par 73 each, while senior David Schneider (Albany, Minn.) and freshman Thomas Gutzmer (Jordan, Minn.) followed with a 75 (+3) apiece. Schneider and Wahl are currently tied for eighth out of 103 golfers.

Junior Preston Kopel (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Foley) led all 10 Johnnies with a 1-under par 71 for SJU Blue. He eagled the par-5, 470-yard No. 14 and birdied three other holes and is tied with Schneider and Wahl for eighth.

Senior Matt Lutz (Maple Grove, Minn./Totino-Grace) added a 1-over par 73 and junior Esten Stensrud (Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area) collected a 2-over par 74 for the Blue team.
