COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Saint John's University athletic department hosted its fourth annual Kids Fighting Hunger community service project on Sunday, April 7, in Guild Hall.
Over 350 SJU student-athletes participated in the event, which packed 110,000 meals for Kids Fighting Hunger. The total meals packed continued to rise, surpassing the 100,000 packed last March. This year's meals will be used for local food shelves and cyclone-ravaged areas in Malawi and Mozambique.
"We've developed this great partnership with Kids Fighting Hunger and our guys feel that they are so blessed and they want to give back," SJU athletic director and golf coach
Bob Alpers '82 said. "It's a success because we've got over 300 guys out there helping to feed the hungry on a Sunday in Lent."
Senior golfer
Jack Koehler (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and senior track student-athlete
Max Martin (

Student-athletes donated their own money, and representatives from SAAC also collected money for Kids Fighting Hunger throughout the school year at all Saint John's home football, basketball and hockey games to the total of $17,000.
Members of the monastic community, Granite Rotary, Knights of Columbus, SJU Senate and SJU's campus ministry also participated in the event.
