MONTICELLO, Minn. – No. 16 Saint John's golf wrapped up its regular-season schedule with a win of its 17-team spring invitational on Sunday, April 28, at Monticello C.C. (par 71) in Monticello.
The Johnnies won the three-round tournament with an 884 (+28), three shots ahead of Gustavus Adolphus (+31, 887) in second. Wisconsin-Eau Claire finished third (+36, 892) and Manitoba claimed fourth (+39, 895).
SJU broke Saturday's tie with the Gusties thanks to an 11-over par 295 in Sunday's first round to take a six-shot lead into the finale. Gustavus, however, shot a 294 (+10) in the final round and the two schools were either tied or a shot apart over the final six holes. The Johnnies were able to move ahead for good when sophomore
Preston Kopel (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Foley) birdied his final two holes and GAC registered two late bogeys.

Matt Wahl (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins), the reigning MIAC Men's Golf Athlete of the Week, made his case to earn the honor for a second time by earning medalist honors out of 97 golfers. He led the tournament with 11 birdies and finished with a 212 (-2).

David Schneider (Albany, Minn.) tied with four golfers for second with 10 birdies in the tourney and tied for fifth with a 219 (+5). Kopel tied for 18th (+13, 227) and senior
Jack Koehler (Eden Prairie, Minn.) tied for 27th (+16, 230).

Matt Lutz (Maple Grove, Minn./Totino-Grace) led SJU Blue, which finished 10th (+76, 932), with a 222 (+8) to tie for ninth overall.
The Johnnies host their alumni for a 2 p.m. dual on Friday, May 3, at Blackberry Ridge G.C. in Sartell.
SJU hopes to earn one of the seven Pool C at-large bids to the NCAA Division III Championship when the field is announced after 3 p.m. Monday, May 6, on www.ncaa.com. The national tournament is May 14-17 at Keene Trace G.C. in Nicholasville, Ky.
