COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's tennis clinched an MIAC Playoff berth with its fifth straight win, 8-1, over Hamline on Friday, April 26, at the outdoor Chang Tennis Complex in Collegeville.
Next week's postseason appearance is the Johnnies' (9-7, 6-2 MIAC) seventh in the last eight seasons.
SJU swept the three doubles matches and won five of the six singles bouts, including two via an 11-9 super-breaker.
Sophomores
Thomas Gillach (Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes) and
Nate Jordre (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) won their 10th consecutive match at No. 1 doubles, 8-6, to improve to 11-1 (6-0 MIAC) on the year.
Seniors
Ryan Meger (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi) and
Jonah Punnoose (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) moved their season mark to 10-2 (6-0 MIAC) with an 8-5 victory at No. 2.
Gillach and Punnoose both won their first sets at Nos. 2 and 4 singles, respectively, dropped the second and won via an 11-9 score in the super-breaker.
Meger, senior
Hunter Krebsbach (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds View) and junior
Jess Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) all won in straight sets. The victory was Meger's sixth in a row and the fifth straight for both Hansen and Krebsbach.
Jake Trondson, who is ranked 11th in the Central Region, won the lone match for Hamline (8-11, 1-7 MIAC) at No. 1 singles over Jordre, 6-2 and 6-2.
The Johnnies wrap up the regular-season schedule with a 2:30 p.m. match against No. 38 Carleton (21-2, 7-0 MIAC) on Sunday, April 28, at Life Time Fitness in Lakeville.
