NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Saint John's baseball ran its win streak to five games with a doubleheader sweep of St. Olaf, 17-7 and 9-5, on Good Friday, April 19, in Northfield.
The Johnnies (23-8, 8-4 MIAC) cracked 16 hits in game one and broke open a 6-5 lead with seven runs in the third inning. The 17 runs scored were the most by SJU in conference play since the 20-3 win over Macalester on April 22, 2015, in Collegeville. The Johnnies' season high came in the 18-3 victory over Wisconsin-Superior March 18 in Tucson, Ariz.
The Oles (15-8, 6-4 MIAC) led game two for the first five innings until SJU posted a four-run sixth to complete the sweep.
Junior
Joey Stock (Cold Spring, Minn./Saint John's Prep) batted 5-for-8 with two home runs, a double, seven RBI and five runs scored in the sweep. The bulk of the day's output came in the opener: 4-for-5 with the two homers, six RBI and four runs scored. The performance was Stock's third multi-homer game of his career.
Junior third baseman
Jack Schramel (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) became the 31st Johnnie to reach 100 career hits with his second double of game one. He also drove in four and scored four runs in the doubleheader.
Senior center fielder
Max Jackson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) went 4-for-9 with four runs scored, which broke the program record of 123 held by Aaron Pfaff '15. He now holds the school records for games played (156), at-bats (568), runs (126) and hits (191). Jackson needs two stolen bases and five RBI to tie two others records.
Stock started game one on the mound but lasted only 1.1 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits.
Senior
Bennett Wiggins (St. Anthony, Minn.) stepped in an allowed two runs on six hits in 4.2 innings to earn the win and improve to 6-2 on the year. The six wins lead the MIAC. Sophomore
Nick Penick (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
Stock gave SJU a quick 1-0 lead in game two with a sacrifice fly, but the Oles answered with a sac fly of their own and gained a 4-1 lead with three consecutive RBI singles with two outs in the bottom half.
The Johnnies chipped away to tie the game at 4-4 with three two-out runs. Freshman catcher
Ethan Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./Blake) doubled with two outs in the top of the second and scored on junior shortstop
Michael Gruber's (Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area) RBI single. Stock singled with two outs in the top of the third and scored on junior first baseman
Aaron Kloeppner's (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) double. Kloeppner came through again with a two-out RBI single to tie the game in the top of the fifth inning.
STO, however, re-gained the lead (5-4) with a pair of fly balls that dropped near the right-field line in the bottom of the fifth.
Senior second baseman
Thomas Meland (Northfield, Minn.) walked to start the sixth inning and scored on Roe's second double of the game. Junior right fielder
Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn./International Falls) brought in what proved to be the game-winning run on a sac fly and two more came around to score when the shortstop kicked a hot shot from Stock into left field.
Gruber opened the eighth inning with a double and crossed the plate on a sac fly from Schramel to end the scoring.
Freshman
Nathan Brandecker (South St. Paul, Minn.) made his second collegiate start and allowed four runs (one earned) on six hits in four innings. Senior
Tommy Auger (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) picked up the win, allowing one run on five hits. Both pitchers struck out four and walked one.
The Johnnies continue the road trip with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday, April 20, against Augsburg (7-19, 3-9 MIAC) at Parade Stadium in Minneapolis.
