MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Saint John's baseball split a doubleheader with Augsburg on Saturday, April 20, at Parade Stadium in Minneapolis.
The Johnnies (24-9, 9-5 MIAC) dropped game one to Augsburg (8-20, 4-10 MIAC), 4-2, but bounced back with a convincing 12-3 win in the nightcap. The loss was SJU's fifth by two runs or less this season and first to the Auggies since 2012, snapping the Johnnies' 13-game win streak in the series. The loss was also SJU's first at Parade Stadium since 2007.
Junior designated hitter
Joey Stock (Cold Spring, Minn./Saint John's Prep) continued his onslaught on the baseball by going 4-for-7 at the plate, including his fifth home run in six games (seventh of the season) and his first collegiate triple. He scored three runs and drove in two on the afternoon.
Senior center fielder
Max Jackson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) went 3-for-5 and became SJU's all-time leader in stolen bases with 48 thanks to three swipes in game two. In addition to stolen bases, Jackson holds the school records for games played (158), at-bats (577), runs (128) and hits (194). He needs five RBI to tie the school record of 107 held by Jay Kasner '07.
Augsburg broke a 2-2 tie with two unearned runs off senior
Alex Budde (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) in the bottom of the sixth inning to claim the win.
SJU jumped out to a 7-1 lead in game two and broke it open with five runs over the final three innings. Every Johnnie in the lineup recorded a hit and either scored a run or tallied an RBI.
Junior
Mason Miller (Big Lake, Minn.) earned the win in his third collegiate start, improving to 3-0 on the year, by allowing the three runs on six hits in 5.2 innings. Sophomore
Nick Penick (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) pitched 3.1 innings of hitless relief (3.2 on the day).
The Johnnies travel to St. Thomas (16-8, 8-3 MIAC) for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday, April 23, in St. Paul. The Tommies are scheduled to finish their halted game from April 16 at Gustavus Adolphus on Monday, April 22. The game is tied, 5-5, in the top of the 11th inning.
