Johnnies Conclude Trip With One-Point Loss

ORLANDO, Minn. – Saint John's tennis ended its spring-break trip with a 5-4 loss to NAIA St. Francis (Ill.) on Thursday night, March 7, at the Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando.

The Johnnies (2-5 overall) won two of the three doubles matches, at Nos. 1 and 2, and two via the super-breaker in singles play. Sophomore Thomas Gillach (Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes) and senior Jonah Punnoose (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) team up to win at No. 1 doubles (8-6) and were victorious at No. 1 (6-4, 4-6, 10-7) and No. 3 (1-6, 6-2, 10-4) singles, respectively.

Senior Ryan Meger (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi) and junior Jess Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) won at No. 2 doubles, 8-2.

Hansen suffered a loss via the super-breaker to the Fighting Saints (2-11 overall) at No. 6: 3-6, 6-3 and 5-10.

The Johnnies return to conference play with a 1 p.m. match against Concordia-Moorhead next Saturday, March 16, at Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D.
