ORLANDO, Fla. – Saint John's tennis split its matches on Tuesday, March 5, in Orlando.
The Johnnies (2-3 overall) started the day with an 8-1 win over Monmouth (Ill.) but suffered a 7-0 defeat to Division I Appalachian State. The loss, like SJU's defeat March 4 to Hampton, was played under Division I rules in which the three doubles matches count as one point.
SJU cruised through doubles competition against Monmouth, allowing only one point in the three matches, and won five singles matches in straight sets.
The Scots' (0-5 overall) lone victory came at No. 1 singles when sophomore
Nate Jordre (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) left the match during the first set due to injury.
The Mountaineers (3-8 overall) proved to be too much for SJU in the nightcap. Junior
Jess Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) and senior
Ryan Meger (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi) were within reach at No. 2 doubles in a 6-4 loss.
The Johnnies take on Division II Stonehill (Mass.) at 1 p.m. ET Wednesday, March 6, at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
