TUCSON, Ariz. - Saint John's baseball picked up two more wins, one casual and another dramatic, on Sunday, March 17, in Tucson, Ariz.
The Johnnies (12-1 overall) cracked 16 hits in a 10-2 win over Marian (Wis.) in Sunday's first game and rallied from a 10-0 deficit in a 12-11, walk-off win over Wesleyan (Conn.) later in the day. SJU entered the bottom of the ninth inning down 11-8 and earned the win on senior left fielder
Jack Wingerd's (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) one-out, two-run double.
Saint John's 10, Marian 2
The Johnnies batted around in the first inning against the Sabres (4-1 overall), collecting four runs on five hits, to gain the early lead. SJU added two more in the third inning and another three, on a bases-clearing double off the bat of junior third baseman
Jack Schramel (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral), in the fifth.
Senior
Bennett Wiggins (St. Anthony, Minn.) improved to 3-1 with the win, allowing two runs on nine hits in eight innings. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. Senior
Nate Lutmer (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper) pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
Junior right fielder
Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn./International Falls) and senior center fielder
Max Jackson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) collected three hits, two runs scored and a stolen base each.
Saint John's 12, Wesleyan 11
The Cardinals (2-6 overall) tallied five runs in the top of the second inning, thanks in large part to a grand slam from the No. 9 batter, and added five more runs in the third.
SJU erased the goose egg with four runs in the bottom of the third when Ulrich and Jackson recorded back-to-back RBI singles and Schramel stroked a two-run double. The Johnnies added four more in the sixth, but Wesleyan answered with an unearned run in the top of the seventh to make it 11-8.
Schramel started the comeback with an RBI single in the ninth and senior second baseman
Thomas Meland (Northfield, Minn.) followed with a ground-rule double. Senior first baseman
Tommy Auger (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) was intentionally walked to load the bases before Wingerd's walk-off, two-run double.
Junior
Stanley Ridgeway (Litchfield, Minn.) pitched a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning and earned his first collegiate win.
Senior
Alex Budde (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) and freshman
Nathan Brandecker (South St. Paul, Minn.) combined for one hit allowed in 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Ulrich and Schramel led the SJU bats with three hits apiece. Ulrich ended the day 6-for-10 with three RBI and three runs scored, while Schramel drove in six on four hits (4-for-9).
The Johnnies take on the Sabres again at 11 a.m. MT Monday, March 18, and follow that game with another 9-inning contest against Wisconsin-Superior at 2:30 p.m. MT.
