SJU Baseball Splits Pair in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – Saint John's baseball split a pair of nine-inning games on Monday, March 18, in Tucson, Ariz.

The Johnnies (13-2 overall) committed six errors and issued nine free passes (six walks and three hit batsmen), four of which came with the bases loaded, in a 13-7 loss to Marian (Wis.) in the first game. SJU bounced back, however, with an 18-3 win over Wisconsin-Superior in the nightcap. The game was shortened to seven innings due to the 10-run rule.

SJU defeated Marian by a 10-2 score yesterday in the first of two nine-inning games.

Marian 13, Saint John's 7
The Sabres (5-1 overall) scored one run or more in all but one inning (eighth). SJU gained leads of 2-0 and 3-2, but Marian totaled eight runs in the first three innings and one each in the fifth, sixth and seventh. MU's first four batters in the lineup combined to go 9-for-12 at the plate with nine RBI and five runs scored.

Junior shortstop Michael Gruber (Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area) filled in for the injured MIAC Player of the Week, junior right fielder Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn./International Falls), in the leadoff spot and went 3-for-5 with an RBI.

Junior Joey Stock (Cold Spring, Minn./Saint John's Prep) was saddled with the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits in two innings of work.

SJU gained an 8-2 lead over the Yellowjackets (2-3 overall) after three innings before a nine-run outburst in the fourth. Freshman catcher Ethan Roe (Golden Valley, Minn./Blake) cracked a two-run triple in the second inning and a two-run double in the fourth. He finished 2-for-3 with five RBI and two runs scored.

Junior Mason Miller (Big Lake, Minn.) made his second collegiate start and earned the win, allowing the three runs on seven hits in five innings. He struck out six. Senior Dominic Schleif (Shakopee, Minn.) and junior Alex Swanson (Lino Lakes, Minn./White Bear Lake) pitched a scoreless inning of relief each.

Gruber ended the day 5-for-8 with three RBI and three runs scored from the leadoff spot.

The Johnnies wrap up their Arizona trip with a 9 a.m. MT game against Buena Vista (Iowa) on Tuesday, March 19.
