SARTELL, Minn. - Saint John's tennis opened its 2019 season with an 8-1 non-conference win over Northwestern (Minn.) on Saturday, Feb. 9, at Sta-Fit in Sartell.
The Johnnies swept doubles competition and won five of the six singles matches in straight sets.
Sophomore
Nate Jordre (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) made his first appearance at No. 1 singles (6-1, 7-5), as did sophomore
Thomas Gillach (Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes) at No. 2 (6-3, 6-1). The duo also posted an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles. Jordre ended the 2018 season as the Johnnies' No. 4 player in the final five matches, while Gillach played most of his freshman season at No. 3. The two combined for a 28-10 (13-5 MIAC) singles record last spring.
Isaac Velgersdyk won the lone match for Northwestern (0-2 overall) at No. 6 singles (4-6, 6-3, 10-5).
The Johnnies travel to Owatonna in two weeks for a neutral-site match against Luther (Iowa) at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Owatonna Tennis Center.
