SJU Completes Sweep of Bethel With 3-0 Shutout

Box Score

BLAINE, Minn. - Saint John's hockey completed the weekend sweep of Bethel with a 3-0 win on Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine.

Junior goaltender Andrew Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) made 26 saves to record his second shutout of the season and third of his career. The win was also the 20th of his career (20-11-5 record, 5-2-2 in 2018-19).

SJU (7-5-3, 5-2-1 MIAC) pulled away from BU (1-13-1, 1-6-1 MIAC) with two third-period goals to post its 11th consecutive win over the Royals. The game served as the Johnnies' first of five consecutive road games.

Following a scoreless first period, senior forward Robb Stautz (Roseville, Minn.) gave SJU a 1-0 lead 1:23 into the second period. Senior forward Matt Colford (Champlin, Minn.) and junior defenseman Adam Orn (Ramsey, Minn.) were credited with the assists on the goal, Stautz's sixth of the season.

Junior forward Brady Heppner (Crookston, Minn.) made it 2-0 with a shorthanded goal, his team-leading ninth tally of the season, 2:25 into the third period. Heppner took the pass from junior forward Kyle Wagner (St. Francis, Minn.) around center ice and beat the BU goaltender with a backhanded shot to the far corner of the net.

The game became interesting with 8:10 remaining when BU was gifted a 2-minute, 5-on-3 power play due to a 2-minute minor penalty on Wagner and a double-minor penalty on sophomore defenseman Travis Brown (Otsego, Minn.) following a scrum after a Royal ran into Lindgren. Lindgren, however, made seven saves during the 4-minute penalty kill.

Junior captain Cole Souto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) ended the scoring with a power-play goal, his 10th career tally, with 1:29 remaining thanks to helpers from Heppner and Wagner. Heppner now has as 17 points (8g/9a) in eight career games against Bethel.

The Johnnies travel next weekend to Wisconsin for a pair of non-conference games against nationally ranked opponents. SJU visits No. 4 Wisconsin-Eau Claire for a 7 p.m. contest Friday, Jan. 11, followed by 7 p.m. puck drop on Saturday, Jan. 12, at No. 1 Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
