EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - No. 3 Wisconsin-Eau Claire broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of third-period goals in a 4-2 win over Saint John's on Friday, Jan. 11, in Eau Claire, Wis.
Zach Kennedy was at the right place at the right time as a rebound bounced to him in front of the net for what proved to be the game-winning goal 5:48 into the third period for UWEC (14-2-2, 1-0-1 WIAC).
SJU (7-6-3, 5-2-1 MIAC) pulled junior goaltender
Andrew Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) prior to an offensive-zone faceoff with 35.7 seconds left and gained a power play with 15 seconds remaining, but a turnover at the point turned into a shorthanded, 6-on-4 goal from Braxton Collins with 6.1 seconds on the clock. Lindgren made 34 saves in the loss.
Junior forward
Brady Heppner (Crookston, Minn.) opened the scoring for SJU with his 10th goal of the season 11:02 into the game.
The Blugolds' Lucas Kohl tied the game 2:12 later and gave the home team a 2-1 lead with a power-play tally 8:25 into the second period.
Senior forward
Matt Colford (Champlin, Minn.) tied the game at 2-2 with his fifth goal of the season, on the man advantage, at the 10:19 mark of the second.
The Johnnies travel to Stevens Point, Wis., for a 7 p.m. puck-drop against the top-ranked Pointers on Saturday, Jan. 12.
