COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's tennis ended the regular-season schedule with a 9-0 loss to No. 6 Gustavus Adolphus on Sunday, April 29, at the Chang Tennis Complex in Collegeville.
The win clinched the 30th consecutive MIAC regular-season title for the Gusties (21-8, 9-0 MIAC), who are the region's top-ranked team.
Senior
Tim Larson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) took the region's top-ranked player, Mohanad Alhouni, to a tie-breaker in the first set at No. 1 (7-6/7-4) before falling in the second, 6-3.
The Johnnies (13-4, 7-2 MIAC) took two of the singles matches to the super-breaker. Junior
Ryan Meger (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi) battled back from a first-set loss (6-4) at No. 2 with a 7-5 win in the second, but dropped the super-breaker with a 10-5 decision.
Freshman
Nate Jordre (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) won his first set (6-3) at No. 4 and nearly won his second (7-6/7-4), and fell in the super-breaker (10-6).
Jordre and junior
Jonah Punnoose (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) saw their win streak at No. 2 doubles end at eight with Sunday's 8-1 defeat.
The Johnnies travel to face Carleton for a MIAC Playoff semifinal match at 4:15 p.m. Friday, May 4, in Northfield. SJU fell to the Knights by an 8-1 score Saturday (April 28) in Collegeville.
