WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. – Saint John's tennis accomplished something it had not done since 2004, reach seven conference wins, with a 6-3 victory over Macalester on Saturday, April 21, at Life Time Fitness in White Bear Lake.
SJU jumped out to a 4-2 lead, thanks to a clean sweep of the three doubles matches and a pair of 6-1 set wins from freshman
Nate Jordre (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) at No. 4 singles. Macalester (9-5, 6-1 MIAC) put pressure on the Johnnies with wins at Nos. 1 and 2, but freshman
Thomas Gillach (Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes) and junior
Hunter Krebsbach (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds View) clinched the match win at No. 3 (7-6/9-7, 6-0) and No. 5 (6-3, 6-2), respectively.
Gillach is now 12-3 (7-0 MIAC) on the year, while Jordre is 15-2 (6-1 MIAC).
The three doubles wins improved the Johnnies' record to 18-3 in conference play.
The Johnnies' 13-2 record (7-0 MIAC) is the program's best, in regards to wins, since 2004 (14-9 overall, 7-2 MIAC) and a far cry from last season's 5-13 (4-5 MIAC) mark.
SJU is now 17-3 against the Scots since 2001, including victories in each of the last seven meetings.
The Johnnies host Carleton at 2 p.m. next Saturday, April 28, outdoors at the Chang Tennis Complex in Collegeville.
