Johnnies Move Up to No. 4, Wallop Gustavus for 15th Straight Win

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – No. 4 Saint John's basketball extended its win streak to 15 games with a 76-54 victory over Gustavus Adolphus on Monday, Jan. 29, in Collegeville.

The Johnnies (17-1, 13-0 MIAC) moved up two spots to No. 4 in the latest D3hoops.com top 25 poll, which was released minutes before tonight's tip-off. SJU is the only MIAC program ranked in the poll's top 25 with a total of 524 votes.



The Johnnies shot 50 percent from the field (14-for-28) and from three-point range (7-for-14) to build a 35-24 halftime lead. Gustavus (10-9, 8-6 MIAC) cut its deficit to six (39-33) 3:17 into the second half, but SJU responded with a 14-2 run and added another 15-2 run over a 3:43 span for good measure.

Senior guard Brent Hentges (Carver, Minn./Holy Family Catholic) led all scorers with 16 points on a perfect 6-for-6 night from the field (4-for-4 from three-point) off the bench. 

Senior post Tyler Weiss (Shakopee, Minn.) posted 14 points, six rebounds and four assists, while junior guard David Stokman (Maple Lake, Minn.) added 13 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Sophomore post Lucas Walford (Elko, Minn./New Prague) recorded his third double-double of the season, 12 points and 11 rebounds, and four blocked shots off the bench.

SJU attempted only four free throws in the game, all of which were made by Walford in the second half. GAC went 2-for-8 from the charity stripe.

Senior guard Garrett Goetz (Rosemount, Minn.) registered a career-high 10 assists.

Vannis Smith led the Gusties, who shot 37.9 percent (22-for-58) from the floor, with 12 points.

SJU finished at 53.4 percent (31-for-58) for the game, including 56.7 percent (17-for-30) in the second half.

The Johnnies out-rebounded GAC 37-29 and totaled scoring advantages in the paint (38-12), off turnovers (15-9) and in second-chance points (12-6).

SJU hosts Concordia-Moorhead (5-13, 3-10 MIAC) at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, in Sexton Arena.
