COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – No. 4 Saint John's basketball improved its win streak to 16 games with an 86-72 victory over Concordia-Moorhead on Wednesday, Jan. 31, in Collegeville.
The Johnnies (18-1, 14-0 MIAC) led by as much as 29 (81-52) with 6:48 to play before unloading the bench. NCAA Division III's top shooting team at 53.3 percent, SJU ended the night at 47.2 percent (25-for-53) but recorded scoring advantages off turnovers (18-10) and second-chance points (13-9). The Johnnies recorded 23 assists on 25 made field goals and went 26-for-34 at the free-throw line.
The Johnnies travel to face St. Olaf (15-5, 11-4 MIAC) in a battle of the MIAC's top two teams at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, in Northfield. SJU can clinch a share of the MIAC regular-season title, its first since 2000-01, with a win Saturday.
Concordia (5-14, 3-11 MIAC) shot 56.3 percent (18-for-32) in the second half, including a 70-percent performance (7-for-10) from three-point range, in the second half. The Cobbers committed 25 fouls in the game with two second-half technicals.
Sophomore post
Lucas Walford (Elko, Minn./New Prague) led all scorers with 18 points and fell one rebound shy of a double-double. He had 12 points, including three thunderous dunks, and seven boards in the first half alone.
Junior guard
David Stokman (Maple Lake, Minn.) totaled 16 points, seven assists and four rebounds. Senior guard
Patrick Strom (Fargo, N.D./Shanley) added 14 points, thanks to a 9-for-10 showing at the charity stripe, and freshman wing
Oakley Baker (Geneva, Minn./New Richland-Heartland-Ellendale-Geneva) drilled four of his five long-range attempts for 14 points off the bench.
Senior post
Tyler Weiss (Shakopee, Minn.) saw his streak of games with 10 points or more end at 38 with an eight-point output Wednesday night. All eight points came in the second half for Weiss, who played only 16 minutes. He passed Paul Henrichs '06 for 12th in school history with 1,242 career points and is now 32 behind former teammate Mitchell Kuck '16 in 11th.
Senior guard
Garrett Goetz (Rosemount, Minn.) was held scoreless, but collected eight assists (to zero turnovers) and four rebounds. He entered tonight's game 10th in Division III in assist-turnover ratio (+3.44) and 11th in assists per game (6.1). His 118 assists this season are the 10th-most in an SJU season.
Jordan Davis and Jacob Pazdernik led CC with 14 points apiece.
SJU is now 48-7 against Concordia in Collegeville since the 1964-65 season.
