SARTELL, Minn. – Saint John's tennis cruised to a season-opening 9-0 non-conference win over Northwestern on Saturday, Jan. 27, at Sta-Fit in Sartell.
SJU won five of the six singles matches in straight sets and all three doubles matches by a four-point margin or more.
Senior
Tim Larson (No. 1; Bloomington, Minn.), junior
Hunter Krebsbach (No. 4; St. Paul, Minn./Mounds View) and junior
Jonah Punnoose (No. 5; Bloomington, Minn.) each held their opponent to one match point in their singles wins.
Junior
Ryan Meger (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi) battled back from a 6-2 loss in his first set at No. 2 singles to pull out a 7-6 (7-4) win in the second and earned a 10-4 victory in the super-breaker.
Freshman
Thomas Gillach (Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes) recorded his first collegiate win in dual competition at No. 3 (6-2, 6-1) and sophomore
Jess Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) completed the sweep at No. 6 (6-0, 7-5).
The Johnnies return to the court in two weeks (Saturday, Feb. 10) for a 1:30 p.m. non-conference match against Minnesota-Morris in Sartell.
