Box Score
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – No. 6 Saint John's ended the second half with an 11-0 run over the final 3:11 to force overtime in an eventual 84-80 win at Bethel on Saturday, Jan. 27, in Arden Hills.
Junior guard
David Stokman (Maple Lake, Minn.) scored all seven points for SJU (16-1, 12-0 MIAC) in overtime. He made what proved to be the game-winning shot, a contested runner in the paint, to break the 80-80 tie with five seconds remaining in the extra session. BU's Jack Jenson committed a turnover on the ensuing in-bounds play with one second left and the Royals (14-5, 9-5 MIAC) were issued a technical foul. Stokman made both free throws to seal the win, SJU's 14th consecutive.
Stokman led all scorers with 25 points and recorded 11 rebounds for his first collegiate double-double. He made only three of his first 14 shot attempts and finished 10 of 27 from the field (3-for-12 from three-point range).
The Johnnies went 37:59 of game time between leads (13:04 left in the first half to five seconds remaining in overtime). The Royals built and maintained their lead throughout the game thanks to 17 three-pointers (17-for-30). BU shot 20 percent above their season average (36.3) from three-point range on the afternoon.
SJU erased the 11-point deficit in four offensive possessions, three treys and a layup, during a two-minute span late in the second half. The Royals, meanwhile, missed their final four shots after making three in a row to increase their lead from five to 11.
Matt Ambriz hit a three-pointer to give BU an 80-77 lead with 2:55 left in overtime and Stokman tied it back up on a trey of his own with 1:56 to play. The Royals forced a turnover with under a minute to go in overtime, but sophomore post
Lucas Walford (Elko, Minn./New Prague) rejected Derek Magnuson's shot attempt in the paint to set up the go-ahead offensive possession.
Sophomore wing
Jubie Alade (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) totaled 22 points, including 15 in the first half, on 7 of 12 shooting.
Senior post
Tyler Weiss (Shakopee, Minn.) posted his sixth double-double of the season and 16th of his career, 18 points and 12 rebounds. The 16 career double-doubles broke Weiss' tie with his father, Travis '94, for the third-most in SJU history (since the 1983-84 season). The 18 points Saturday enabled Weiss to pass Tom Grudnowski '72 into 13th on SJU's all-time scoring list with 1,220. He is now 18 points behind Paul Henrichs '06 in 12th.
Granger Kingland led BU with 23 points, thanks to a 7-for-11 showing from behind the arc, while Riley Dearring added 20.
SJU won the battle in the paint, both scoring (40-24) and on the glass (45-34). The two teams combined for only 16 fouls and 13 free-throw attempts in the game.
The Johnnies return to host Gustavus Adolphus (10-8, 8-5 MIAC) at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, in Sexton Arena. The game was originally scheduled for the previous Monday, Jan. 22, but was postponed due to weather.
