No. 12 SJU Runs Win Streak to 12, 77-62 Over St. Thomas

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – No. 12 Saint John's basketball extended its win streak to 12 games with a 77-62 win over St. Thomas in front of a capacity crowd on Saturday, Jan. 20, in Collegeville.

SJU (14-1, 10-0 MIAC) out-rebounded St. Thomas 42-32, including a narrow 8-7 margin on the offensive glass, but the Johnnies posted a 15-3 scoring margin in second-chance points.

The Johnnies also out-scored the Tommies by five (8-3) off turnovers, despite committing 10 to the visitors' eight. All 10 turnovers occurred in the first half.

Junior guard David Stokman (Maple Lake, Minn.), who missed Wednesday's game against Macalester due to the flu, led all scorers with 26 points on 10 of 16 shooting, including a 4-for-8 performance from three-point range. The 20-point performance was his third of the season and 14th of his career.

Senior post Tyler Weiss (Shakopee, Minn.) followed with his fifth double-double of the season and 15th of his career, 20 points and 12 rebounds. The 15 career double-doubles ties him with his father, Travis '94, for the fourth-most in SJU history (since the 1983-84 season). The 20 points Saturday enabled Weiss to pass Bill Christopherson '53 and Tom Melancon '68 into 14th on SJU's all-time scoring list with 1,182. He is now 35 points behind Tom Grudnowski '72 in 13th.

SJU shot 47.2 percent (25-for-53) from the field to the Tommies' 38.3 percent (23-for-60) and both teams were 8-for-19 (42.1 percent) from beyond the arc. The Johnnies went 19 of 25 (76 percent) from the free-throw line, thanks to 22 UST fouls, while the visitors made only eight of their 15 attempts from the charity stripe.

Sophomore post Lucas Walford (Elko, Minn./New Prague) collected eight points and 15 rebounds, while senior guard Garrett Goetz (Rosemount, Minn.) scored 12.

Ryan Boll led the Tommies with 19 points and added seven rebounds. Michael Hannon totaled 15 points and Connor Bair added nine points and eight rebounds off the bench.

The game was tied eight times and experienced six lead changes in the first half until SJU ended the frame with a 14-6 run over the final 4:46.

UST chipped away early in the second half to trail by five (43-38) 1:32 in, but the Johnnies went on a 13-4 run and led by double digits for a majority of the second half. Back-to-back three-pointers from Hannon cut the Tommies' deficit to nine (69-60) with 2:53 left, but the home team scored eight of the game's final 10 points.

The Johnnies wrap up their three-game homestand with a 7 p.m. tip-off against Gustavus Adolphus (9-7, 7-4 MIAC) on Monday, Jan. 22, in Sexton Arena.
