ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's hockey peppered Concordia-Moorhead with a program-record 60 shots on goal in a 9-1 win on Friday, Jan. 19, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (HBNHC) in St. Cloud.
SJU (12-4-2, 7-2-0 MIAC) scored four goals in a span of 5:59 in the first period and ended the night 3-for-4 on the power play. Thirteen different Johnnies recorded a point, including five with three apiece. Junior forward
Mitch Fritz (St. Cloud, Minn.) tallied two goals and three others registered two points each.
The nine goals scored were the most in head coach
Doug Schueller's 10-year tenure as head coach of the Johnnies and the most by an SJU team since Nov. 18, 2005 (a 12-1 home win over the Cobbers). That game was also the last time SJU won by an eight-goal margin or more.
The 60 shots on goal broke the previous record of 58 set in the Johnnies' 5-0 home win over Hamline on Jan. 24, 2004.
Concordia (7-8-3, 4-4-1 MIAC) denied the shutout on a goal with 1:33 remaining in the game.
Sophomore goaltender
Andrew Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) made 33 saves to improve to 7-2-1 on the season. He leads the MIAC in GAA (1.68), save percentage (.935) and winning percentage (.750).
Sophomore defenseman
Cole Souto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal, on the power play, 6:21 into the contest. Twelve different Johnnies account for the team's 12 game-winning goals this season.
