ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's hockey out-shot Concordia-Moorhead 44-33 but dropped a 4-2 decision on Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (HBNHC) in St. Cloud.
The game started 13 hours after the Johnnies' 60-shot, 9-1 win over the Cobbers Friday night.
Concordia (8-8-3, 4-5-1 MIAC) found the back of the net first 12:59 into the game and made it 2-0 five minutes into the second period.
SJU (12-5-2, 7-3-0 MIAC) tied the game at 2-2 with a pair of power-play goals 1:44 apart in the middle of the second period. Sophomore forward
Brady Heppner (Crookston, Minn.) put the Johnnies on the scoreboard with his team-leading ninth of the year at the 10:28 mark and junior forward
Robb Stautz (Roseville, Minn.) tied it with his fifth of the year.
Senior forward
Sam Valerius (Maple Grove, Minn.) assisted on both goals to give him an even 60 career points (23g/37a). Heppner also assisted on Stautz's tally for his team-leading 20th point (9g/11a) of the season.
CC's Tanner Okeson scored what proved to be the game-winning goal during a 4-on-3 power play with 3:41 left in the second period.
Bryan Kronberger sealed the win with an empty-net goal, his third point of the game (2g/1a), with 23 seconds remaining in the contest.
Freshman goaltender
Mac Berglove (Elk River, Minn.) made 29 saves in the loss.
SJU went 2-for-3 on the power play to finish 5-for-7 on the weekend.
The Johnnies host the U.S. National Under-18 team for a 7 p.m. exhibition game on Friday, Jan. 26, at the HBNHC.
