Box Score
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – No. 12 Saint John's basketball shattered a 39-year old scoring record in a 133-80 win over Macalester on Wednesday, Jan. 17, in Collegeville.
The Johnnies (13-1, 9-0 MIAC) shot 63.6 percent (21-for-33) from the field in the game's first 20 minutes to build a 70-30 halftime lead, and topped that with a 76.5-percent (26-for-34) performance in the second half to finish at 70.1 percent for the game.
The 133 points surpassed the previous record of 121 that was set Dec. 15, 1978, in the Johnnies' 121-62 home win over George Williams (Wis.).
SJU tallied 31 points off 18 Macalester turnovers and over half (78 of 133) of the team's scoring came from the non-starters Wednesday night. All 15 Johnnies scored at least three points and the team totaled 11 blocked shots in the victory, SJU's 11th straight.
Senior guard
Patrick Strom (Fargo, N.D./Shanley) led six Johnnies in double figures with 24 points, thanks to a career-high eight three-pointers (8-for-12), in 17 minutes of play. He also tied a career-high with five assists.
Senior wing
John Oliver (Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic) scored a career-high 16 points and four others poured in 10 points apiece: senior post
Tyler Weiss (Shakopee, Minn.) and sophomore posts
Ethan Novacinski (St. Joseph, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo),
Sam Schuberg (Eagan, Minn.) and
Lucas Walford (Elko, Minn./New Prague). The individual totals were career highs for Novacinski and Schuberg, while the 10 points pushed Weiss past Aaron Burtzel '11 into 16th on SJU's all-time scoring list, two points behind Bill Christopherson '53 in 15th.
Senior guard
Garrett Goetz (Rosemount, Minn.) became the 15th Johnnie in school history to eclipse 200 career assists with six dimes on the night. He now has 202 and needs 40 to tie Mike Trewick '93 for 10th.
Jackson Henningfield led the Scots (2-13, 1-9 MIAC) with 26 points, including 22 in the second half alone. Mac plays a brand of basketball similar to Grinnell (Iowa), or Loyola Marymount of the 1980's, in which the team relies on quick offensive possessions and three-point shooting, applies a full-court press on defense and uses the entire roster with mass substitutions throughout the contest.
The Johnnies host St. Thomas (9-6, 7-3 MIAC) for a 1 p.m. tip-off on Saturday, Jan. 20, in Sexton Arena.
Reserved tickets for Saturday's game are sold out, though general-admission tickets are available when the doors open at 11 a.m.
