SJU Moves Into Tie for First Place With 3-1 Win at Hamline

Box Score

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John's hockey moved into a three-way tie for first place in the MIAC with a 3-1 win at Hamline on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at the TRIA Rink in downtown St. Paul.

Junior forward Matt Colford (Champlin, Minn.) scored twice for SJU (11-4-2, 6-2-0 MIAC), 2:20 between goals in the second period, and sophomore goaltender Andrew Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) made 20 saves to earn his 10th career win and improve to 6-2-1 on the year. Lindgren leads the MIAC in GAA (1.75) and save percentage (.930).

Russ Jordan started the game's scoring with a power-play tally, his eighth goal of the season, for Hamline (5-10-1, 1-6-1 MIAC) 1:49 into the second period.

An outstanding individual effort from Colford tied the game for SJU with 5:36 left in the second period. Colford carried the puck into the offensive zone, stickhandled around two Piper defensemen and unleashed a wicked wrister to the top left corner of the net for his third goal of the season.

Colford gave the Johnnies a 2-1 lead with his second goal of the night, off a faceoff win from senior captain Huba Sekesi (Germering, Germany), 2:20 later.

Junior forward Joe Chitwood (Carmel, Ind.) gave SJU a two-goal lead with his third goal of the season, and 20th career point (6g/14a), on a one-timer at the back post from freshman forward Ryan Kero (Hermantown, Minn.) 9:15 into the third period.

The Johnnies return home to host Concordia-Moorhead (7-7-3, 4-3-1 MIAC) for two games this weekend at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, beginning with a 7 p.m. contest on Friday, Jan. 19. Saturday's tilt is scheduled for 1 p.m. as part of Hockey Day Minnesota.
