ANOKA, Minn. – No. 3 Wisconsin-Stevens Point broke open a one-goal lead with three goals in the third period en route to a 5-1 win over Saint John's on Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Anoka Ice Arena in Anoka.

SJU (10-4-2 overall) out-shot the Pointers (13-4-2 overall) 31-30, but was unable to convert on six power-play opportunities and hit the pipe twice in the defeat.

Drew McLean made it 3-1 for UWSP 7:18 into the third period and the Pointers added two more goals 19 seconds apart with under six minutes to play. The fifth and final goal was a shorthanded empty-netter.

Brennen Miller gave UWSP a 1-0 lead 15:18 into the game. The Johnnies had 53 seconds of a 5-on-3 power play later in the first (4:13 total on three chances), but did not score.

Senior forward Sam Valerius (Maple Grove, Minn.) tied the game with his second goal in as many games, and fifth of the season, 1:20 into the second period. Junior forward Garrett Riebling's (Chanhassen, Minn.) shot on goal trickled between the goaltender's skate and the post, and Valerius charged in to knock the loose puck in the net. Sophomore defenseman Adam Orn (Ramsey, Minn.), who was playing on his hometown ice Saturday night, earned the second assist.

Luke McElhenie gave the lead back to the Pointers with his ninth goal of the year, on a deflection at the side of the net, with 1:44 left in the second. The goal proved to be the game-winner.

Freshman goaltender Mac Berglove (Elk River, Minn.) made 25 saves in the loss.

The Johnnies return to MIAC play with a 7 p.m. game against Hamline on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at the TRIA Rink at Treasure Island Center, the Minnesota Wild's new practice facility, in St. Paul.
