COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's tennis ended its regular-season schedule with a 6-3 win over St. Olaf on Saturday, April 29, at the Chang Tennis Complex in Collegeville.
The win, coupled with Macalester's 8-1 loss at Carleton, gives SJU (5-12, 4-5 MIAC) the fifth seed in next week's five-team MIAC Playoffs. SJU owns the head-to-head tie-breaker over the Scots (7-9, 3-5 MIAC) due to its 7-2 win back on April 1.
The Johnnies advance to play Bethel in the MIAC Playoffs quarterfinals at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, at the Ona Orth Tennis Complex in Arden Hills.
St. Olaf (1-12, 1-8 MIAC) gained an early 2-1 lead after doubles competition, but SJU bounced back with five of the six singles wins. Nos. 1-3 singles were all decided by the super-breaker.
Junior
Tim Larson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) continued his winning ways, extending his win streak to seven matches, at No. 1. He dropped the first set (7-5) but retaliated with a 7-5 win of his own in the second and a close 10-7 decision in the super-breaker. Larson is now 12-4 (7-2 MIAC) at No. 1 singles this spring.
Sophomore
Ryan Meger (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi) won his first set (6-3) at No. 2, fell in the second by a similar score (6-2) and registered a 10-8 victory in the super-breaker.
