COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's opened the new Chang Tennis Complex with a 7-2 win over Macalester on Saturday, April 1, in Collegeville.
The Johnnies (2-10, 1-3 MIAC) posted an early 2-1 lead after doubles competition, including a 9-7 win from sophomore
Hunter Krebsbach (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds View) and freshman
Ben McKimm (Hutchinson, Minn.) at No. 3, and won five of the six singles matches. Three of the singles matches went to the super-breaker (2-1 record for SJU).
Junior
Tim Larson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) improved to 7-4 (2-2 MIAC) at No. 1 singles with a straight-set win (6-3, 6-2), while sophomore
Ryan Meger (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi) evened his conference record at 2-2 (5-6 overall) with a straight-set win of his own at No. 2 (6-3, 6-1).
Sophomore
Jonah Punnoose (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) won at No. 4 thanks to an 11-9 decision in the super-breaker (6-0, 3-6) to match Meger's season record at 5-6 (2-2 MIAC). McKimm followed suit at No. 6 with a 10-7 decision in the super-breaker (6-0, 4-6) and freshman
Jess Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) won at No. 5 (6-0, 6-3).
Peter Willenborg registered the lone singles win for the Scots (6-5, 1-2 MIAC) over Krebsbach at No. 3 with a wild 12-10 score in the super-breaker.
The Johnnies host a pair of matches next weekend, beginning with a 3 p.m. bout with Bethel on Saturday, April 8, in Collegeville. St. Thomas visits SJU for a noon contest on Sunday, April 9.
