Johnnies Return to Winning Ways With Sweep of Pitt-Bradford

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

FT. MYERS, Fla. – No. 29 Saint John's baseball returned to the win column with a doubleheader sweep of Pitt-Bradford (Pa.), 5-0 and 4-1, on Monday, March 6, in Fort Myers, Fla.

The Johnnies' pitching staff allowed two extra-base hits and recorded a 0.64 ERA in 14 innings on the day.

Junior infielder Jeron Terres (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) led SJU (5-2 overall) at the plate, going 3-for-7 with a double and RBI on the day. His two-out, infield single off the pitcher gave the Johnnies an early 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one. He is batting .545 (6-for-11) with two doubles and four RBI in three games on the trip.

Sophomore outfielder Max Jackson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) doubled to start the third inning and scored on senior third baseman Derek Schiebel's (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) RBI single in the next at-bat. Jackson stole two bases and scored three runs in game one.

The Johnnies tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning. Junior catcher Dominick Schleper (Shakopee, Minn.) drove in a run with an RBI single and two others came around to score, unearned, thanks to two separate throwing errors by the Panthers (1-4 overall).

Three Johnnie pitchers, led by sophomore Jake Dickmeyer (Woodbury, Minn.), handled the rest. He allowed six hits and struck out two in five innings to improve to 2-0 on the year. Junior Ted Christian (Le Center, Minn./Tri-City United) and freshman Joey Stock (Cold Spring, Minn./Saint John's Prep) pitched a scoreless inning of relief each to post the combined shutout.

SJU broke a scoreless tie open with four runs in the fourth inning of game two. A leadoff double from Terres, followed by singles from sophomore infielder Thomas Meland (Northfield, Minn.) and freshman infielder Jack Schramel (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral), plated the first run. A throwing error and wild pitch made it 3-0 before sophomore outfielder Jack Wingerd (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) brought in the fourth run on a suicide-squeeze bunt.

A bases-loaded, two-out single cut the Johnnies' lead to 4-1 in the top of the fifth inning.

Senior Alex Kendall (St. Cloud, Minn./Saint John's Prep) allowed the lone run on five hits, in five innings of work, to record his first win (1-1) of the season. He now has a 0.90 ERA and a .194 opponent batting average in 10 innings pitched so far on the year.

Junior Ben Etzell (Greenbank, Wash./Coupeville) struck out four and allowed two hits in two scoreless innings of relief to earn his first save of the season (third of his career).

SJU plays Mitchell (Conn.) for a 9 a.m. EST doubleheader on Tuesday, March 7, at Terry Park 1.
